SMAC Review Report

  1. Academic Development

The most challenging SMAC I completed was for HCM 641- Healthcare Finance and Reimbursement with Professor Lauren Pete in fall 2018. The title of my SMAC was “How has claim acceptance impact the reimbursement of ABC HOSPITAL?” I chose this topic because in my position I analyze the claim acceptance rate for the hospitals, run reports to analyze the rejected claims, and create developments in the system to correct claims before they are sent out. The topic was approved along with the data I collected. What made this challenging was the communication with the professor. I don’t believe the instructions were clear and so I received feedback that I didn’t have enough data to support my research. I felt if this was communicated at the time I presented my data then I would have done better.


The most successfully SMAC I completed was for MGT 525- Marketing Concepts and Strategies with Professor Crawford in summer 2018. This class was engaging and I learned a lot of new information. The title of my SMAC was “Marketing Research Plan: 360 EHR "Building a successful EHR system" I chose this topic because I currently work as a systems analyst and specialize using the EPIC software. When under-going asset mergers with hospitals we go through implementing a new EHR system to that hospital. The instructions for the SMAC was clearly given and I was able to apply it. I enjoyed writing the paper even though we had a short time due to the course being taken in the summer. The professor used clear life examples which made understanding the material a lot easier.

  1. Persuasion

For HCM 641 the two managerial abilities I chose were using technology and Pattern recognition. Based on the topic I chose these skills would need to be developed to complete the paper. I have developed using technology by highlighting on a higher level the role technology plays in claims acceptance. This has helped me incorporate finance with technology. I have developed pattern recognition by identifying the common rejections for claims. In order to strengthen this ability one must focus on trend and be able to interpret the data. With these skills I understood the importance of claim acceptance and the impact it has on reimbursement and the role technology plays in finance.

For MGT 525, the two managerial abilities I chose were self-confidence and Persuasiveness. The way a person presents a product in the market dictates if the customers will believe the marketer or doubt. The customers need to believe the marketer of the product and one of the ways to trust the marketer is by looking at the way he or she presents a product in the market. During the course I had to create a PowerPoint of my SMAC and present it to the class. I learned to be confident in my work and answering questions. Before taking this idea to a higher level, I must present it to the classmates and persuade them that the product is worth being in the market. The level of persuasiveness must be high, and this is because there is a possibility that someone might present an idea that is similar to the one that I have introduced. At the end of my presentation my classmates were sold on my idea.
