Abstract

Music is always a powerful tool to express the musician’s thinking and belief by the lyrics and contents. By using the words and rhythms inside the songs, musicians can show their own thinking for the society or themselves. Studying not only the song itself, but also the significance and spirit of the music, the attitude of the musician and the culture of every races can be learned. With the increasing interaction between every races in the world and people from different region of the world, it becomes really essential to understand the difference between different culture; also the importance of analyzing difference between of every culture inside their unique music can help people to understand each culture and make progress.

By analyzing the essence and spirit of the songs “Mc Linn da Quebrada” from Brazil and “Playa Giron” from Cuba. The song “Mc Linn da Quebrada” represents the thematic of “identity struggle” and the song “Playa Giron” represents the thematic of “the revolutionary left”. In my paper, I will first introduce the two musician from different culture with different thinking of the society. The song “Mc Linn da Quebrada” express the dissatisfaction from the author to the society that she believes gays deserve equality and everyone have the right to be who they want to be. The song “Playa Giron” records the invasion that his land had been occupied by another culture; the author states his dissatisfaction by composing the song and he wants equality between every culture. Then, I will analyze their political thinking with the importance inside their songs; and also I will state clearly how their thinking and songs contribute to the social change. In order to make the perfect analysis, I will make research for not only the song, but also the historical contexts for these two musicians. By analyzing the significance of their songs, I will emphasize how can their spirit can make social change and make people to be influenced; that’s the power of music. The readers who have same thoughts or who are unsatisfied with today’s society care the analyze most.
