Role conflict and Role Strain Discussion

A conflicting interest is a situation in which an individual has competing interest or loyalties. The conflict of interest involves a person who has two relationships that might compete with each other for the person loyalties (Murray, 2019). A nonprofit manager might have a conflict of interest which conflict with his position of responsibility in an organization. For example, the manager of the non-profit might be given a role taking care of all suppliers dues but because he or she has personal interest with a particular organization offering consultative services, he or she may facilitate the payments and overprice so that he or she can benefit in the process. If the consultative services were to total around $50,000, the manager may indicate $60,000.

The manager would have violated his trust in the company by benefiting from the contract deal. The organization offering services might have consulted the manager and agreed on how much he or she will benefit if the contract is approved and payments facilitated immediately. The best strategy of handling the conflict is through board conflict resolution where the manager is put under disciplinary action if they found him guilty of all accusation or be forced to resign because the act committed by a manager is more like fraud for personal gain which is contrary to the organization mission and vision.

The non-profit organization would still initiate a policy document that would guides employees on do and don'ts so that it will guides all staffs on what to do and avoid any form of conflict interest. For example, there must be strict rules on a personal relationship between employees, guides rules on interest between other organizations and guiding role on payments term, supplier's approval and qualification and promotion terms. This will help avoid any form of conflict interest that might befall employees and board members. The board members might approve a supplier who they have a personal interest so that they benefit but if there are guiding rules then it is difficult to do so.
