Unit/Subject:

American History.

Instructional Plan Title:

National holidays in America.

Lesson Summary and Focus:

The students in this lesson are supposed to understand the importance of all the national holidays in the country and their role in American History.

Classroom and Student Factors/Grouping:

The class is composed of thirty students (14 boys and 16 girls). The learning ability and diversity of students is different. Some of the students have learning disabilities. The instructor and guardian have a responsibility to ensure that the students effectively learn. I need to recognize that students in the classroom learn at different paces to meet individual needs. Evaluating the exhibitions of the students and offering feedback is a great signal for the students.

National/State Learning Standards:

Describe the significance of national holidays:

  1. Presidents’ Day

  2. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

  3. Veterans’ Day

  4. Memorial Day

  5. Constitution Day

  6. Labor Day

Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives:

Students by the end of the lesson should be able to identify the six national holidays in America and their importance. Students should also know the specific dates when the national holidays are celebrated.

Academic Language

The general academic vocabulary includes the six holidays celebrated in America. They include:

  • Constitution day

  • President’s day

  • Martin Luther King Jr. day.

  • Labor day

  • Memorial day

  • Veteran’s day.

I will teach the students the terms by showing them powerpoint presentations that discuss each of the holidays. Besides, I will require the students to read a book that discusses the national holidays and their importance. I will then ask questions during the class to assess the students and determine whether they understand the terms.

Resources, Materials, Equipment, and Technology:

Students will be given access to the school library to acquire books that are relevant to the important national holidays in America. Besides, they will be offered the six holidays discussed on paper, poster cards and classroom laptops.

Section 2: Instructional Planning

Anticipatory Set

Students can effectively identify the six national holidays and now in this lesson, they will be able to understand why the national days are considered off days. Employees are given the day off and students do not attend school during the six days.

  • I will utilize a poster board and show students each national holiday, why it is celebrated and why the day is considered an off day. I will then ask students to indicate their thoughts in regards to why the national holidays are very important.

  • I will account their thoughts on the whiteboard while asking several more questions relating to the topic to ensure the students are actively engaged to improve the learning outcomes (Kristanto, 2017).

Time Needed

10 minutes

Multiple Means of Representation

Video – I will utilize videos which discuss the importance of the six national holidays and they can be accessed in the classroom laptops. The videos will be useful in enabling the students to acquire background information on the relevance of the holidays and what they mean to the American people.

Venn diagram – I will utilize a Venn diagram to represent the connections that the six holidays have and their general importance in American history.

Explain how you will differentiate materials for each of the following groups:

  • English language learners (ELL):

I will offer supplementary materials to ELL because they are likely to be moving at a slower pace compared to others.

  • Students that are abled differently:

I will offer direct specialized instruction to students that are abled differently(special needs). I will offer them academic remediation to ensure they meet the expected competencies.

  • Students with gifted abilities:

I will require these students to attempt and make a Venn diagram that connects the six national holidays and indicates they are all important.

  • Early finishers:

I will issue complex additional materials to these students.

Time Needed

15 minutes

Multiple Means of Engagement

  • Secret answer – I will utilize this activity for students that are not confident about their answers. To do this, I will ask a question, assign various responses to different numbers and ask the students to hold up the number of fingers that are similar to the answer they perceive to be correct. The students will be facing me to effectively conduct the exercise.

  • Quick writes – This activity is very important in providing students with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned. In this activity, I will ask a question related to the topic and require students to write a response and share it with a neighbor.

  • Structured discussions – I will ask a question and ask students to discuss the question in a group of four people then later one person in the group will present what they discussed to the rest of the students.

Explain how you will differentiate activities for each of the following groups:

  • English language learners (ELL):

In the structured discussions, ELL should not be in the same group. Only one English language learner should be in a group. Through this, the other group members will effectively explain areas that the student does not comprehend (Davis, 2017).

  • Students with special needs:

I will directly manage the structured decisions whereby a student with special needs is included. This is to ensure that other group members discuss in a manner that not only meets their needs but the needs of the special needs student.

  • Students with gifted abilities:

I will allow gifted students to work together in structured discussions to challenge themselves.

  • Early finishers:

I will provide an additional question in Quick writes for the early finishers and require them to share the question and response to several neighbors.

Time Needed

15 minutes

Multiple Means of Expression

Scholars will engage in the thumbs up and down activity that will be aimed at evaluating whether the students understood the topic at hand. I will require students to put their thumbs up if they agree with a statement and put their thumbs down if they don't. I will also require students to come up with a one-paragraph reflection that should not be less than 100 words to determine what they have learned. The reflection will be an opportunity for the students to indicate areas they did not understand which will help me determine whether re-teaching is necessary (Lindahl, 2015).

Explain how you will differentiate assessments for each of the following groups:

  • English language learners (ELL):

For the reflection, scholars will be required to determine the barriers they faced in effectively understanding the topic at hand. English language learners will, therefore, have an opportunity to indicate whether they experienced a language barrier and recommend how it can be addressed.

  • Differently

-abled students:

Because the reflection will require students to indicate the barriers that they faced, students with special needs will be able to indicate whether their individual needs were met and in case they were not, they will recommend how they can be met. The students will be allowed to utilize their notes from previous lessons.

  • Students with gifted abilities:

Scholars will be allowed to draw a Venn diagram to indicate what they learned and areas that need improvements.

  • Early finishers:

The reflection does not have a maximum limitation, therefore, early finishers can write as much as they want for the reflection.

Time Needed

15 minutes

Extension Activity and/or Homework

Students are required to create a poster board which will be due in two weeks. The display boards should have various visuals related to the topic at hand and include the key terms learned in the lesson.

Time Needed

2 weeks

Rationale

Developing the Unit Plan was both challenging and interesting. Throughout the unit, I will pay attention to the six American national holidays. Students are supposed to identify the specific dates when each of the holidays is celebrated and understand its significance in American history. Students by the end of the unit will be required to choose a national holiday and create a creative poster about it. I utilized various teaching and instructional strategies in developing the unit plan. For instance, using videos will be useful in enabling the students to acquire background information on the relevance of the holidays and what they mean to the American people. I also created an opportunity for the students to collaboratively work through structured discussions. Through the discussions, cooperate learning will be fostered and students are more likely to learn from one another. The classroom is composed of individuals with different needs especially because some have special needs while others are English learners. I had to develop differentiated instructions to ensure the needs of everyone in the classroom including those with special needs are met. The second lesson plan is aimed at paying key attention to determining the national holiday’s significance and why the dates they are celebrated are considered off days. The lesson plan is linked to the first lesson plan that was aimed at enabling students to identify the national holidays and determine their overall importance. Students will be assessed through thumbs up and down and secret answer activities. The final lesson plan will be an attempt to determine to what extent the students understood the national holidays. Unlike in the previous lessons, this lesson will require a student to focus on one national holiday and discuss various aspects related to it. The two-week deadline is aimed at providing students ample time to research and utilize what has already been taught to develop a very creative poster board.
