Rubric and Lesson Content

This week we are focusing on the human experience in dealing with information systems. Your required reading includes two articles. Make sure you check them out. You will learn terms such as graphical user interface, mobile computing, and, focus groups. Be sure you are familiar with these terms. Your assignment for this week focuses on mobile computing and medical systems usability. YOU WILL NEED TO DO RESEARCH!

Your assignment rubric for this week is below.

Trends in Usability and Human Factors

An entire field of study is devoted to the subject of human-computer interactions. Arrangement and presentation on the page of essential components plays a large role in how readily people can acquire and use the skills to do their work within a computerized system. The general term for this concept is usability.

Trends for improving system usability include using graphical interfaces, and movement toward more mobile devices.

  • Focus Groups

Bringing together system users to provide design input can be accomplished by using a focus group.

Focus groups are led by moderators who conduct the group for obtaining information in a structured manner. An in-person focus group usually consists of no more than 15 persons. It is often used to obtain a reaction to a proposed product or initiative. Structured questions are developed so that ideas can be sought and generated, but the session will stay on topic.

Specifically, a focus group session concentrates on:

  • Gathering opinions, beliefs, and attitudes; and

  • Encouraging discussion about a particular topic

A focus group is one type of method used in the process of systems design to assist in making the system usable and understandable. Other methods of obtaining information include surveys and interviews with experts.
