Professional Practice Plan

Introduction

Every nursing profession requires that the curriculum be centered on meeting the needs of the future. The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008) is a document that establishes the qualities and skills expected from all healthcare professionals. The outcomes outlined in the paper are designed to enable the graduates from the nursing profession to be competent within the complex healthcare systems while assuming the roles of providing care, planning care, and being a member of a job. This article outlines the areas I feel confident in, the areas that I need more knowledge and skills practice, the ATI skills and review that I will review to increase my experience, the ATI practice and assessment I will complete to improve my critical thinking or analysis and training skills, and the smart practice goals that I have set for myself during the clinical component of this course.

The Areas in which I Feel Confident

I feel confident in the liberal knowledge that I have gained for Baccalaureate generalist nursing practice. The article outlines the roles am expected to play as a nurse under the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (1998). The report has provided me with a solid base in liberal education for my practice and learning as a nurse. For example, I am now more conversant with the roles that I have to play as a nurse and the way I should conduct myself as a professional nurse. The article has enabled me to get a scope of the skills, knowledge, and attitude that is needed in my nursing profession to cope with the ever-changing and complex environment I will be exposed to as a nurse.

I also feel confident in the knowledge the article has shed regarding my discipline as a nurse. The report has established the training expected of nurses and the nursing profession. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (1998), affirm that a generalist nurse should be a provider of care, member of a profession, and should also contribute towards the design, management, and coordination of care. I, therefore, feel confident and ready to add to the direct and indirect supervision of the patients.

Areas I Need more Knowledge/Skills Practice

I feel I need more knowledge/skills practice in the nursing profession. According to Pierre and Conley (2017), the nursing practice requires one to be conversant with nursing knowledge, theory, and research. This is because of the changes that are noted daily in technology and study. The nurse should, therefore, be able to now the latest technologies in the nursing sector and analysis of the best practices in delivering the roles expected of a nurse. Besides, the nursing profession is broad and borrows heavily from other related jobs. I thus need to research to be conversant with them to adopt and apply the knowledge to my professional practice.

ATI Skills and Review Modules to Increase Knowledge

The (ATI) skills are essential for the effectiveness and efficiency of nurse students in their future roles. The ATI skills were formulated to evaluate the academic readiness of health science program applicants (Hoffman et al., 2019). One of the ATI skills that I will need to review is airway management ATI skill. The skills I will get from this module will help me to understand what to do when the airway of a patient is at risk of infection and to keep the air supply open. For example, when the affected patient has a tracheostomy tube with the inner cannula in place, then I understand I should use the folded paper supply to dry the inner cannula after cleaning it. I will, therefore, need to review the airway management ATI skill to gain listening skills and how to interact with patients effectively.

The enteral tube feeding is another ATI skill module that I will need to review. This ATI skill will enable me to understand what a patient is feeling when receiving enteral tube feeding and to make the right decision, like encouraging them to go to the dining hall when they have flat effects and seem isolated. I will also be able to review the medication administration ATI skill. This will enable me to understand the routes of administration like through gastric tube, nasogastric tubes, sublingual, and buccal, which are all routes of administration that are administered orally.

Pain Management is an ATI skill module that I will need to review to get the accepted practice guidelines and challenges that I might face in pain management (Hoffman et al., 2019). In reviewing this ATI skill, I will be able to know the questions that I would ask a patient regarding the quality of pain the adult patient was undergoing. Additionally, I will be able to understand the right prescriptions for patients with a various degree and types of illnesses. Finally, the nasogastric tube ATI skill that can be used to know the right way to insert the tube properly. For example, as a nurse, I will be able to understand where the patient is to flex their head after the tube passes their nasopharynx by the closing of the epiglottis for proper insertion of the tube. These modules will provide me with the knowledge of how poor diagnostics could impact the health of the patient. You need to address all 9 Baccalaureate Essentials in the section of having confidence and/or needing knowledge.

ATI Practice Assessments to Improve Critical Thinking/Analysis

ATI practice assessments are meant to improve our critical thinking and analysis. For this reason, there is the various assessment that I will focus on. One of the ATI practice assessments is knowledge and clinical judgment skills. According to Pierre and Conley (2017), nurses are meant to provide quality care to patients through minimization the risk of further harm to both the patient and the providers. This can only be possible once I am knowledgeable, and I can make the right clinical judgments. I will, therefore, use the ATI of Success to show how knowledge and clinical judgment can be used to formulate the basis for the nursing practice. The ATI of Success will provide me with the strategies that I can use to answer test items and give patient care effectively. This will prevent the situation where I make uninformed decisions that put the patients' and the providers' safety at jeopardy. I should be knowledgeable to interrupt, recognize, evaluate, and correct health care errors whenever they occur. This will help me to gain more knowledge and be able to make the right clinical judgments, which in the process will enable me to promote a culture of caring and safety.

Finally, to deliver quality care, I will need to familiarize myself with urgent issues. This will enable me to establish priority setting frameworks (Pierre & Conley, 2017). Priority setting frameworks are the ranks that I can use when making decisions about the nursing actions that need the first attention. These frameworks will help me to know the right priority findings, the proper sequence of nursing actions I will need to take, and the priority of the nursing actions. The ATI Helix of Success provides seven priority-setting frameworks that can be followed to make the clinical judgment. Maslow's hierarchy of needs provides five basic levels of needs where survival needs are to be given priority.

Practice Smart Goals to Achieve

To be effective, I have established specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART) goals that I will need to achieve during the component of the course. One of them is efficiency. Efficiency is a smart goal that will enable me to be effective in my work. For example, I should establish a goal that will outline that I should have accomplished all the critical tasks before the end of my shift. This will enable me to be efficient.

Another goal is to find a mentor to benefit from mentorship. I will set my goal that within the next few weeks, I should have found a mentor that I can communicate with bi-monthly, and the means through which I will be communicating with them: either face-to-face or through the phone. My third goal will be to plan my career. In career planning, I will examine ways through which I will develop a career. For example, I might expect to attend nursing conferences that are aimed at boosting my area of specialty.

The fourth SMART goal that I will set will be to improve patient care. Through this goal, I will set the requirements that I must achieve before my shift ends. For example, I should talk to the next nurse for thirty minutes regarding the details for the patient and any instructions that might be required to improve the care for the patient. Finally, my fifth goal will enhance my performance accuracy. Through this goal, I will establish that I should be in apposition to fully understand the procedures and policies for the medications that I am required to administer to patients. This will help me have better performance accuracy.

For your fifth goal, how will you measure your understanding? These goals are difficult to follow. Goals are written in one sentence…..For example: ”Writer will describe the proper protocol for xxxxx with 100% accuracy.”
