Managers use various frameworks to organize strategic planning. Most frameworks follow a similar logic and share common steps. What are the common steps that are used by most managers to organize strategic planning?

“Most frameworks follow a similar logic and share common steps, typically cycling through some variation of the following sequence: (1) identify potential product markets and assess each for opportunities and threats; (2) assess the preferences of targeted customer segments; (3) analyze internal strengths and weaknesses relative to customers’ expectations and competitors’ competencies; (4) formulate a strategy; (5) set clear and compelling objectives; (6) formalize programs, policies, and tactics; (7) acquire resources, create capabilities, and develop competencies; and (8) monitor thresholds and adjust standards given change in performance, rivals, or markets” (Daniels, Radebaugh, & Sullivan, 2018).

Define value chain and discuss how companies can design and manage their value chain to create values for their companies. Support your answer with a real-life example.

“Value-chain analysis helps managers understand the potential and performance of resources and capabilities, thereby clarifying cost structures and value creation” (Daniels, Radebaugh, & Sullivan, 2018). At the company that I work for, we have a CRM (Customer Relationship Manager) that helps us to track items like the value chain analysis. It helps us to see products that the customer may benefit from, or products that the customer might have that are not performing very well. When this is the case, we can help the customer to maximize that product to get the best results.

Define value proposition and discuss how a company’s value proposition can add international expansion. Support your answer with a real-life example.

“Value propositions define how product and service features are assembled and offered to meet customer needs” (Kambil, Ginsberg, and Bloch, 2008). Knowing, understanding, and practicing the concept of your company’s value proposition can be advantageous when trying to expand. Expansion is successful when a company can keep consistency across the board. There are times when the rules are bent to abide by rules and regulations of other countries, however, the culture should remain the same with the value proposition as the backbone of how the company is being ran.

  1. International Business by Daniels, Radebaugh, and Sullivan lays out a common framework used by managers for strategic planning. (1) identify potential product markets and assess each for opportunities and threats; (2) assess the preferences of targeted customer segments; (3) analyze internal strengths and weaknesses relative to customers’ expectations and competitors’ competencies; (4) formulate a strategy; (5) set clear and compelling objectives; (6) formalize programs, policies, and tactics; (7) acquire resources, create capabilities, and develop competencies; and (8) monitor thresholds and adjust standards given change in performance, rivals, or markets.

Value chain is defined by Daniels, Radebaugh, and Sullivan as “the collective activities that occur as a product moves from raw materials through production to final distribution; the disaggregation of value creation.” The value chain is broken down into two separate groups of activities: primary activities and supporting activities. A MNE’s strengths and weaknesses can be observed through a value chain and allows managers to better strategize individual activities. It also allows for a company's cost structure to be analyzed and monitored by individual steps rather than as a company as a whole. A good example of a value chain would be Starbucks. Starbucks can have their activities broken down and analyzed; for example, the company puts an emphasis on the primary activity of marketing with aggressive marketing towards their target demographics. A supporting activity in this chain would be their infrastructure, which compliments Starbucks high level of marketing with high-quality customer service and pleasing environments. (Bajpai, P., 2019)

Value proposition is defined as “why a customer should buy its goods or use its services.” (Daniels, Radebaugh, & Sullivan, 2018) Value propositions are tailored to a specific demographic that the product is targeted towards, and can be changed for different international markets. For example, Starbucks does not have an official slogan in the United States. However, in China, Starbucks has the slogan “falling in love with latte.” (Olivier, 2015) This difference in advertising difference may be due to the fact that Starbucks has a long standing presence in the United States, Starbucks entered the Chinese markets in the late 1990’s. In addition, China is a traditionally tea-drinking country, so a coffee focused brand needs to make more a coffee-forward statement to make themselves stand out.
