Use the principles of organizational justice (procedural justice, informational justice) to analyze the handling of the crisis and the firing of Curtis with respect to the actions of Macrae, Holt, Smith and Curtis. What does this literature tell us about how this situation could have been handled more effectively? Explain.

Eagle Smelting relies completely on a single transportation system, the in-house railroad, to receive raw materials and deliver their finished products for distribution, and utilizes an in-house repair center. The case clearly demonstrates what can go wrong when this single transportation source is interrupted. Describe a minimum of three issues that contributed to the breakdown of the organization’s ability to quickly respond to the crisis as presented and develop a response plan that addresses the transportation/equipment issues, communication issues and leadership issues. Relate each of these individually to specific concepts from the literature and explain.

  1. Compare and contrast the benefits of intrinsic rewards (e.g. – recognition) and extrinsic rewards (e.g. – base and incentive pay) as forms of motivation. How could these forms of rewards be used at all employment levels at Eagle Smelting to address similar situations in the future and how might they be expected to impact performance? Address on-going transportation constraints, management responsibilities and reactions to possible emergency situations.
