Overview
This lab consists of two activities. Activity 1 involves completion of Project 4-2 in the ‘Hands-On Projects’ section of Chapter 4 of the textbook (Ciampa, 2017). Activity 2 involves completion of Project 4-3 in the ‘Hands-On Projects’ section of Chapter 4 of the textbook (Ciampa, 2017). Activity 1 uses the Google Chrome web browser, and Activity 2 uses Microsoft Windows OS. A written lab report completes the assignment.
Activity 1 – Project 4-2: Viewing Digital Certificates
Follow the instructions for Project 4-2 in the ‘Hands-On Project’ section of Chapter 4 of the textbook. This activity requires use of the Google Chrome web browser to perform several operations. Consider the following changes to the instructions provided in the textbook:
14. The ‘copy to file’ button is active on the Details tab.
16.5 ADDED STEP: Save a copy of the certificate using a file format of your choosing, and include a screen shot of the ‘saved’ certificate in your lab report.
Activity 2 – Project 4-3: Viewing Digital Certificates Revocation Lists (CRL) and Untrusted Certificates
Follow the instructions for Project 4-3 in the ‘Hands-On Project’ section of Chapter 4 of the textbook. This activity requires use of the Microsoft Windows OS to perform several operations. Consider the following changes to the instructions provided in the textbook:
Instruction 1. and 2. can also be executed by entering the file name ‘certmgr.msc’ directly into the search input box after left-clicking the Windows ‘Start’ button.
Lab Report
Write a brief lab report describing your observations and experience regarding completion of this lab. Use the recently provided lab report template, located on BB, to complete your lab report. Use screen shots to record your observations and to support your findings. Upload your finished lab report to BlackBoard in the form of a Word document. Be prepared to discuss your findings in class.
You are free to use internet resources (e.g. Wikipedia, Google, etc.) to support the textbook discussion on digital certificates, and to learn more in order to support your findings. All sources referenced in your lab report must be properly cited.
