FEMALE%SPEAKER: That's the best news%I've had so far.

FEMALE%SPEAKER: Is%it really%going to be that bad? I mean, I thin k creating a homeless%shelter%for%teens%and having it built here at the center%makes%sense.

FEMALE%SPEAKER: It is%a good idea. Especially%for%some of these kids%and their% friends%who don't eat anything except for%what we provide every%day. They%really% don 't have a place to go when we have to close the doors%for%the evening. They% are literally%living on the streets, because that's all there is. Yet, before we can convince the mayor%and city%council of this%need, and for%them%to provide the necessary%support , we have to get the community%on board first.

FEMALE%SPEAKER: Is%that going to be difficult?

FEMALE%SPEAKER: Well, when I first reached out to the community, a lot of what I got was%NIMBY%comments. You know, we want to support you, but not in my backyar d.

FEMALE%SPEAKER: It was%really%that bad?

FEMALE%SPEAKER: Well, Tina Simpson, the president of the community% association, is%worried that a homeless%shelter%at the center%would drive down property%values%in the neighborhood. Rick%Saunders, who is%with t he local business%improvement association, and a member%of the chamber%of commerce, he's concerned that homeless%young kids%hanging around the nearby%stores%and shops%would drive business%away, and create a dead zone or%worse. He believes% that kids%will at tack%shoppers%or%simply%steal or%loot from%local stores%in order%to buy%drugs. The only%positive reaction I got was%from%Anne Cook. You know, the author%with the bookstore over%on 11th Street.
