Immigration System

  • There are many issues regarding this situation, whether it be in the past or even now immigration has been a critical factor in our World and continues to be. As far as problems go there are many to look at, immigrant workers are counted against many quotas, there is a limit for immigrants with “extraordinary ability”, they cannot apply for permanent residency on their own, illegal immigrants cannot leave the Country and reapply to return legal, etc. there are many more issues I can address, but these are some of the things that you may not think about on the daily. These issues still have an unreal impact on these immigrants and change their lives for good.

  • Our Country and President even show you how they feel about immigrants in this environment. They have built the first wall to keep illegal immigrants out, more so Mexicans. They are breaking families apart at the border and are treating these people as if they are not humans. It’s sickening to see and what hurts more is that there is almost nothing we can do to intrude.

  • The aspect of immigration we want to focus on would be the families that are being broken up at the border when they try to cross over. How it can have a negative lasting impact on the children, it’s trauma and being exposed to that can affect their whole lives. - The group would be illegal immigrants who are the southern border of the United States.

  • People are immigrating from all over the world, not just Mexico.

  • Trauma informed practice is a key in social work practice today, research would suggest that the trauma these children endure affects their mental health and well-being. Social workers play a key role in helping communities deal with all areas of trauma. Social workers can be invaluable in lobbying for human rights in this particular area. I feel like a huge misjustice is being done to these children and families, and social workers can be beneficial in bringing these human rights issues into play. Social workers can be involved with this population on ground level, they can work to make sure the children that are separated from their parents have the resources to be safe and secure. We can also play a role in helping the parents become linked to legal representation and could also play a role in helping these children find other family members while their parents are in detention.

  • This impacts me personally because no human beings should be denied their children, we should not treat people with this kind of respect. It makes us look less of a Country, we are broken and so is our system.

A fundamental objective of an immigration system is to enable refugees and people with humanitarian needs to resettle fast as obligated by international agreements. To better understand the factors that contribute to successful refugee settlement and to build an evidence base for the development of enhanced programs and policies that assist in the resettlement process, the following quantitative and qualitative questions helps sociologists to learn and comprehend the policies surrounding immigrant resettlement and the obligations of social workers.

The qualitative questions focus on the outcomes that surround humanitarian immigrants concerning their housing situations, community engagement, English language proficiency, health, use of their qualifications, income, labor force participation, and their level of satisfaction with life in their host country.

Qualitative questions:

  1. What factors are connected with negative and positive changes in the above measures during the immigrants’ settlement period?

  2. How do these measures of immigrants’ settlement outcomes change humanitarian immigrants and refugees during their early years of settlement and with increased duration of residence in a country?

Quantitative questions relate to the accessibility and use of both governmental and non-governmental support services. Moreover, they also focus on acquiring the details regarding the effectiveness of welfare programs in contributing to the successful settlement of refugees and humanitarian migrants.

Quantitative Questions:

  1. How many humanitarian migrants and refugees gain access to governmental and non-governmental support services and how many are enrolled in government welfare benefits?

  2. For how long and how often do humanitarian migrants and refugees access these services after their arrival?

Ethical Considerations

Conducting scholarly research requires compliance with several ethical principles. At the core, the principles emphasize that a researcher should maintain beneficence and ensure non-malfeasance. Practically, ethical research principles indicate that a researcher should obtain informed consent from the participant, maintain a participant’s privacy and confidentiality, minimize risks to participants, maintain truancy, and allow a participant the chance to withdraw from research (Fouka & Mantzorou, 2017). While it may seem obvious for a researcher to meet these ethical principles, some instances may arise where it becomes undesirable or impossible to obtain informed consent from a participant. Moreover, some situations may demand that a researcher seeks permission from the participant not to protect their anonymity. However, to address such issues, a researcher has to obtain a better strategy in addressing the research needs.

In the contemporary world, dependence on computers and the internet has induced a stronger need for privacy and confidentiality. Researches span diverse fields in social sciences, behavioral sciences, psychology, and economics, among others. All these fields have resulted in more collection of data. However, when a breach of confidentiality occurs, it violates participants’ rights and exposes them to risks of dignitary harm ranging from stigmatization, social embarrassment, to social and economic status damage. Thus, there exists a dire need to maintain privacy and confidentiality when researching to answer these questions.

Implications to Social Work

Social workers have a mundane responsibility of meeting the essential needs of humanitarian immigrants and refugees. In particular, they play an indispensable role in the integration of refugees, and humanitarian migrants into a host country (Viola, Biondo, & Mosso, 2018). With a multitude of social, economic, health, and political factors that affect their settlement, social workers help in ensuring that all these needs are successfully met. Moreover, they ensure that these individuals receive their human rights and social justice in their host country and the global context.

With the current shift where countries seek to minimize the number of refugees and immigrants entering their countries through stringent restrictive policies, social workers need to understand the current programs put in place to benefit those that manage to enter a country legally. Refugees accepted in the face of intense political pressures and severe resettlement programs face many challenges (Popescu & Libal, 2018). Thus, by understanding the current policies and refugees due to rights, social workers can gain future direction regarding the best practices that meet immigrants and refugees needs.
