Topic The paper for this course should build on the research you have completed fo r participating in the RTP Game. I do not want to ask you to research an entirely different topic, so I suggest that you either write about your character, about the process of decolonization as it occurred in South Asia, or about India in the late coloni al period just prior to the departure of the British. The object of the research paper is to demonstrate your critical analysis of secondary literature on a topic related to the themes of the course, although I am happy if you utilize limited primary sour ces I have suggested. The topic should fit within the parameters of the course and not be something that you have worked on before in another course. Since there isn’t time to complete a research proposal, there is no formal requirement for one, but you must follow these steps to write the paper. 2. Build Your Preliminary Bibliography Start with the text or a general work, and then use the UW library cata logue for books and th e online databases for articles Most useful databases: JSTOR Project Muse EBSCO host Historical Abstracts World Cat Find at least SEVEN (7) scholarly sources for your bibliography. Dr. Emma Alexander 2 3. Internet Sources You may use encyclopedias and even Wikipedia to look things up, but NO ENCYCLOPEDIAS of ANY kind must be cited in your bibliography. Internet sources are only to be cited IN ADDITION to your scholarly sources and must be approved by me IN ADVANCE! 4. START with the most recent material Newer books and articles will have the most up -to -date bibliographies. Look at the footnotes, and find these items. Reading more recent works you can drop some of the older items. Only rarely cite items published before 1970. 5. START with essays and articles Articles are a lot easier to digest than books. You will more easily get into the material and unde rstand the subject by reading three focused articles on the subject than one book. 6. Use Book Reviews Once you have books on your list check the UW library databases for book reviews. Reviews will help you understand what the book contributes to the wider theoretical debates you are examining. If you find a review useful, look to see what else that reviewer has written. 7. What about Primary Sources? The purpose of your research paper is build an argument based on a critical examination of secondary source m aterials, to understand what other histor ians have said about a subject. You are providing a critical analysis of a historical problem based on your reading of the work of other scholars. Primary sources may help you gain insight, but may also distract yo u. Work up a Research Question: Wh at p roblem are you trying to solve? In research you are always trying to answer a question…. After reviewing your notes , experiencing the Game or re -reading my P owerpoints or reading , decide what the question is. From this question develop a working thesi s. Modify both your thesis and your research question as your research carries you in new directions. 9. Ask for help: I strongly encourage you to come and meet me as you prepare this paper. I will have suggestions for bibliography, help you locate sources, refine an argument, help with writing or just talk through the process. I will answer short questions by email, but arrange an appointment with me if you want to discuss your work in progress. 10. Technical stuff: Your essay should be 25 00 words in length , NOT INCLUDING your bibliography, and end/footnotes. YOU MUST USE THE RESEARCH PAPER CHECKLIST ON NEXUS. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS : 1) Writing and form will be part of your grade on all written assignments. The aim of the exercise is to give you an opportunity to improve your research skills, to re -think your critical assessment of material and paper organisation and practice your writing. You are advised to consult the Academic Writing Centre and to have your paper proof -read by someone else. Dr. Emma Alexander 4 2) All a ssignments must be word -processed, and double -spaced on one side of the paper. 3) Number the pages of your paper. 4) The references / citations should be in the proper format, using Chicago Style. 5) Submit your paper to me at the HISTORY OFFICE 3A34 and on NEXU S. 6) Late papers will be penali sed 5% per day for the first 5 days (i.e. December 15th. After that date they will not be accepted. 7) I will give extensions without penalty for documented medical and /or compassionate problems. 8) Papers will be penalized 50% i f submitted without the presentation draft (i.e. the speech). 9) In the case of a computer failure, discuss the problem with the instructor IMMEDIATELY! Do not wait until the paper is due. As I’m sure you know; the number one rule of computer usage is to kee p copies of your work. BACK IT UP! If you lose work on the computer, be prepared to provide research notes and previous drafts. 10) Keep a copy of your paper, and keep all graded written work until you receive your mark in the mail at the end of the course. 11) Please read the University of Wi nnipeg Course Calendar 2019/2020 , especially Academic Regulations and Policies.
