for your final p ape r. Please find other sources, use the references provided at end of encyclopedia entries.

3) Have you used other w ebsites ? These may be permitted, but I MUST approve the m all. Check that I have

approved them! [Articles from the library databases are NOT internet sources].

4) Does your paper have footnotes or endnotes ? YES / NO [It must!]

5) Did you provide a footnote for every ‘new’ fact mentioned in your essay? YES / NO

7) Are your references/footnotes/citations in the proper format? Use Chicago Style.

NOTE how journal title is in italics – and the article title is in inverted commas. Check you have the article title,

journal title, the volume number, the issue number, the date and the EXACT pa ge number. Check name is

FIRS T name last name for FOOTNOTES.

Example of a book: Brinsley Samaroo and David Dabydeen (eds.), India in the Caribbean (London: Hansib

Publishing, 1987), 50.

NOTE for the book the book title is in italics . Check that you have th e place of publication (a city, not a

country), the publisher and the date of publica tion and the EXACT page number. 10 ) In your FOOTNOTES write the author’s name like this…. FIRST name LAST name i.e. Jawaharlal Nehru.

See example above in No. 8. (I n your bibliography it is the opposite since you are sorting alphabetically).

11 ) Have you used ibid in your footnotes? DON’T!! Replace ALL instances of ibid by abbreviating footnotes

after the first time you cite an author.

Abbreviation: Dicki nson, “Decolonising the diaspora”, 612.

Or, Samaroo and Dabydeen, India in the Caribbean , 55.

12) Does your paper have a separate cover page ? It should have your name, your student number, course

number (HIST -2413 ), the instructor’s full name, title of you r paper and the date submitted. YES / NO

13 ) Does your paper have page numbers ? YES / NO [Note: the cover page is NOT page 1]

14 ) Does your paper have a descriptive title ? YES / NO

15 ) Is your paper double -spaced? YES / NO [It should be double -spaced!]

16 ) For your bibliography , are all your items in ALPHABETICAL order? YES/NO

Example of bibliography entry for a journal article:

Make sure you include the full page range of the article.

Example of bibliography entry for a book:

Samaroo, Brinsley and D avid Dabydeen (eds.), India in the Caribbean (London: Hansib Publishing, 1987).

Include all publishing information, BUT NO PAGE NUMBERS!

17 ) Include a bibliography listing all the works used and cited in your paper. If a work is NOT cited in a

foot note /endnot e, it does NOT belong in your bibliography.

18 ) Have you kept an electronic back up copy of your paper and the notes you made for the essay and earlier

drafts of the essay? YES / NO

19) Have you uploa ded a copy of your paper to NEXUS? YES/NO Find ‘RTP Research Paper ’ under
