CJ 202: Additional Crime Scene Information

 You are advised that the female , 36 -year -old Beth Sanders, was pronounced dead upon her arrival at the hospital. This is now a

murder investigation.

 Officer Smith completes a supplemental report of his conversation with the elderly neighbor , 84 -year -old Abigail Connors . She

indicated that she heard arguing and several loud noises. When she looked out, she saw her neighbor Beth on the gr ound and she

saw a male running away down the driveway. She also stated that the male resembled Beth’s ex -husband, Randy, but she could not

be certain bec ause she had not seen him since he moved out more than a year ago and took a job in another part of th e state .

 Officer Jones completes a supplemental report of his conversation with the kids across the street. They were identified as 7 -year -old

Steven Phillips and 10 -year -old Brady Phillips. The kids were home alone and were not supposed to be outside unt il their parents got

home. They stated that they heard yelling and “loud bangs” like fireworks. They saw a man in a black coat running from the house

across the street toward the corner. Because they were towards the back of their house, they did not get a good look at the man

and could not say if they recognized him. They also stated that a blue pick -up truck drove fast up the street shortly after the man ran

away.

 From your conversation with the roofers , you learned that the foreman, 42 -year -old Dan Free man, was the only one who observed

anything of note. He stated tha t he heard some distant yelling, but he was not on the roof at the time and between the nail guns

from his crew and other noise, he did not pay much attention to it. He was unable to say whe ther or not he heard “gun shots.” He

did note that a male in a black coat came running around the corner a short distance away and he got into a black Cadillac th at was

parked on the street. He stated that he found this particularly odd because he did not typically see grown men running and getting

into cars for no particular reason in the middle of the afternoon, and he also thought that it was particularly warm to be wearing a

coat.

 You ask your dispatcher to run a check for vehicles registered to Randy Sanders, and you learn that he owns a black 2010 Cadillac,

and the address on the registration does not show a local address, but one that is several hours away.
