Portfolio Project Milestone

For the Portfolio Project Leadership Analysis Paper, the two leaders I chose to discuss are from my current place of employment Western States Equipment Company. I chose two from my current place of employment because there are many different departments and managers. Each manager has their own style and how they feel is the correct way to conduct business in their role. Based on the success of the department as well as the morale of those in the department is a strong indicator of how successful or unsuccessful this leader’s methods are. The first leader is an old supervisor of mine, Karen Shafner. This leader is one I would consider ineffective and unsuccessful, with first hand experience. The second leader is one of the Vice Presidents of the company Dan Young. Throughout my career at Western States I have had many interactions with this Vice President and would consider him an effective and successful leader.

The Leaders

The first leader to be discussed is Karen Shafner. Before coming to Western States Equipment, Karen Shafner worked for the T-Mobile call center where she worked as a Business Support Manager. She started out in the company as a Customer Communications Associate. One her leader moved to a different department she applied and got the supervisor role. Karen Shafner had been in this leadership role roughly two years before I started. When I first started, Karen Shafner was positive and pleasant to work with. A couple months in is when her whole attitude changed and her real personality started to show.

The second leader to be discussed is Dan Young. This leader has been with Western States Equipment for over 15 years. Dan Young started out as a parts salesman for the company and throughout the years he has moved through different departments such as rental and service as both the entry level role and supervisor, which helped him advance his career into the now Vice President of Parts. Having this background in the company allowed Dan Young to relate to his employees on many different levels. He is able to understand the difficult situations and provide realistic solutions. Each interaction I have had with this leader has been positive and pleasant.
