In a three to four paragraph essay discuss President Eisenhower’s arguments in favor of the Interstate highway. In what ways has the interstate system changed American culture, society, and economics.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, Address to Congress on the Interstate Highway

  • October 4, 1957: Soviet launches Sputnik.

  • The United States became concerned about being behind in science and technology.

  • It raised concerns of what other technological advances the USSR could have. 

  • Nikita Khrushchev on the cover to show the technological power of the USSR.

  • Resulted in the increase of federal science funding, the passing of the NDEA, and the creation of NASA

  • Eisenhower got the idea from when he was in Europe during WWII and saw how fast and easy the German autobahn worked.

  • He discussed how unity is an important factor that allows the nation to work.

  • With free communication and the simple transportation of goods, it unites us (hence our name The United States).

  • He mentions that in the event of an atomic attack, better highways would allow for a quicker and easier evacuation.

  • It is the government's obligation to help better the roads and highway system which can help progress the nation.
