Your Task

This assignment is divided into three sections. Please choose a formal human service organization, and using information gained from class discussions, course materials, and additional academic sources, address the following items.

Process Stages to be followed:

  1. Read through the assignment and rubric carefully. Identify areas needing clarification and ask questions in class.

  2. Choose an organization to analyze and clear it with your instructor.

  3. Continue to work on the assignment. Please ask the instructor questions about any remaining parts that are unclear.

  • Mission, Vision, Goals, Founding Date, Location, etc.

  • What are some activities or services that they have which are helpful in meeting objectives?

  • What is the organization’s structure for workflow? Give concrete examples to show how the organization exhibits specific tenets of this organizational theory. Provide an organizational chart.

  • Discuss the following aspects of the organization, again utilizing theories to guide your discussion and sharing concrete examples from the organization that demonstrate specific tenets of the theory.

    • Types of power in practice

    • Power analysis (issues of dependency and discretion)

    • Leadership styles

    • Communication patterns

    • Technology

    • Organizational culture

  • How does the organization promote empowerment practice?

  • To what extent does the organization engage in empowerment, political analysis and services for diverse groups, such as women, people of color, persons with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ populations?

Resource Development:

  • In an era of austerity, when funds are severely limited and organizations need to contract in size and cut back program offerings, human service managers are virtually forced to develop clear plans for working toward their organizations central mission. Describe how the organization meets their resource needs in order to continue to provide quality services (e.g. funding, fundraising, volunteers, equal employment opportunity, firing and appraising agency employees, and burnout). In order to accomplish this task, you will need to understand clearly the activities that you identified as being important for the organization.

  • Generate a list of the current funding sources.

Accountability/Evaluation

  • Describe a general methodology, which the agency uses to evaluate itself, as well as its programs.

  1. COMMUNITY ANALYSIS

Community Information/ Demographics

  • In describing the community, obtain census data so that you can provide a comprehensive picture of who resides in that community.

  • Discuss what communities the organization serves, thinking of community as place, function, system, and/or population.

Community Engagement

  • How do the organization and community communicate?

  • To what extent does the organization engage in community initiatives?

  • Does the community have a voice in organizational programming?

  • To what extent is the community integrated into agency and individual practice?

  1. SUMMARY/OPINION (THIS SECTION SHOULD BE 2-3 PAGES)

  • Review the Organization and Community analyses information, and reflect on how the application of theories enhanced your understanding of the organization and its various components. Which theories were most useful? Why?

  • Discuss theories from this course that you were drawn to but may not have been incorporated into the organization you focused on. What did you see as the strengths of these theories? How did your values, culture, philosophy, needs, and motivations influence your assessment of the theory?

  • Using what you know about formal organizations and this specific organization, describe how you, as a social work consultant, would proceed in problem solving through the organizational and community problems. Be sure to discuss what theory would shape your approach.
