Abstract

This study explores the factors influencing burnout in radiography profession and how these factors relate to the concept of job satisfaction. Additionally, the paper will propose possible measures that can be taken to reduce burnout in the radiological workplace and consequently improve the working conditions of radiographers. To achieve this purpose, a systematic literature review method was used to collect relevant data on the factors determining job satisfaction among radiologic technologists, the causes of burnout, and the available measures used to combat burnout in radiological world. Both primary and secondary sources were extracted from electronic databases using keywords including radiology, burnout, job satisfaction, radiology, fatigue, radiological department. The sources were then assessed for their quality using the CONSORT 2010 technique which provides a checklist of 25 items that determine the quality of a study. The results of the systematic review indicated that job satisfaction among radiologic technologists is determined by the age, experience, income, and work control. In regards to age, millennials tend to be satisfied with jobs that provide flexibility and career development while older employees are satisfied with jobs that offer work-life balance. Additionally, higher job experience and higher income among radiologic technologists are associated with job satisfaction. Also, Having autonomy in work activities leads to job satisfaction. It was further established that the Major causes of burnout in radiologic technologists include emotional exhaustion, for instance, depersonalization and perceived lack of personal accomplishments. Additionally, inadequate student training leads to burnout because it leaves radiological technologists with improper skills to handle their work effectively. The long overtime hours may also cause burnout. Among the measures that can be used to combat burnout included promoting positive psychology to create optimism, addressing personal accomplishments to instill feelings of satisfaction, and strengthening team relationship to boost self-esteem hence improving wellbeing of individuals.
