Develop a Response Paper topic that addresses the influence of music in politics, culture, and/or society in the 1950s through the 1970s

FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT

HIST 1233 – Modern U.S. History Survey

TOPIC: Music, Civil Rights, and Social Justice

READ: Global Passages: “The Republic of Rock”

In a clear, concise, and well-constructed seven (7) paragraphs essay please respond to the following:

ASSIGNMENT: Your final research project will result in a Response Paper in which you search out the relevant sources. You may use articles found online, in the library, passages from books, or textbook. Nonetheless you must find, and include in your “works cited,” at least THREE sources not associated with class assignments such as Global Passages and textbook readings.

First read the assigned “The Republic of Rock” passage. Then develop a Response Paper topic that addresses the influence of music in politics, culture, and/or society in the 1950s through the 1970s. I suggest you look at (but not necessarily limited to) rock and roll, folk, rhythm and blues, jazz, and yes, even country music - you may also concentrate on one specific decade, artist, or genre of music.

Please state your Response Paper topic as a title for your paper.

Again, your final analysis should include a reasoned opinion given the research and arguments you have presented in your paper.

-The content of the essay is largely up to you; however, please closely follow the parameters of the above assignment.

-Your ideas are important but this is not a work of opinion but of reasoned thought given your assigned and researched readings.

- In this case you will need a works cited page!

-To notate information quoted or paraphrased use parenthetical notation with author’s last name and page number. For example, (Schaller, 632) would indicate that information came from page 632 of your textbook, while (Author’s last name, 51) would indicate information from page 51 of an article you are using, and note web pages by using a brief title of the article.

Your paper should be set up as follows:

  • Double spaced, indent paragraphs and do not add additional spacing between paragraphs.

  • One inch margins

  • 12 point Times New Roman.

  • Be certain your name and page numbers are in the header or footer on each page. Microsoft Word will accomplish this task easily.RESPONSE PAPER (#2)

  • HIST 1233 – Modern U.S. History Survey

  • READ: Global Passages “Fordlandia: Small Town America in the Amazon.” (Schaller, p 760)

  • READ: Fordlandia article from “Benson Ford Research Center. (Section II , Response Paper #2) HYPERLINK "https://www.thehenryford.org/research/rubberPlantations.aspx" https://www.thehenryford.org/research/rubberPlantations.aspx

  • READ: The Jungle: An analysis (Content: Videos and Readings)

  • ASSIGNMENT: In a clear, concise, and well-constructed seven (7) paragraphs essay please respond to the following:

  • Consider the plight of immigrant workers in the U. S. and indigenous workers in Brazil. Two disparate but similar groups of workers, of course, created consumer goods for the American middle class through U. S. corporations. In what ways are the working conditions and opportunities similar for the Fordlandia and Jungle workers? (The Jungle of course is fiction but certainly represents working conditions in Chicago meatpacking plants) How does such, in your informed opinion, (you may incorporate an outside source here) compare to working conditions for immigrant and indigenous workers today?

  • -The content of the essay is largely up to you; however, you should not use any sources outside of your textbook, the two assigned Fordlandia readings, and “The Jungle: an Analysis.”

  • -Your ideas are important but this is not a work of opinion but of reasoned thought given your assigned readings.

    • You do not need a works cited page or bibliography.

  • -To notate information quoted or paraphrased use parenthetical notation with author’s last name and page number. For example, (Schaller, 632) would indicate that information came from page 632 of your textbook, while (Drake, 51) would indicate information from page 51 of Drake’s article.
