Which roles of the NP in the primary care setting you would find most fulfilling?

The role of the NP that I would personally find the most fulfilling would have to be the direct patient care.  Taking all the pieces that the patient brings to us and putting them to form a picture, then taking that picture, analyzing it and applying interventions to the patient’s life to improve their life.  I look forward to combining my current training as an RN and my training as an NP into one cohesive practice.

A NP can diagnose an illness, prescribe medication as and interventions as needed, all the while treating the patient, treating the patient holistically.  Physicians diagnose an illness, prescribe medications, order interventions to treat and/or diagnose a patient – just like NPs.  The difference according to Nurse Practitioner Schools (2020), is that physicians are trained in a manner that does not provide the same holistic approach as nurses and nurse practitioners are trained.

Which roles of the NP in a primary care setting you would find most challenging?

The role of the NP that I would find the most challenging is the legal role that faces a NP.  As an RN we have legal and ethical challenges and issues that we must be aware of and adhere to.  These challenges for an NP have very similar ramifications as a physician in many states.

Consistency throughout the United States is a very large problem and barrier for NP.  The scope of practice, certifications, requirements to prescribe, and wages vary greatly from state to state. According the Association of American Medical Colleges (2017), by the year 2030 the physician shortage could reach more than 100,000.  That number is astronomical and NP add a layer to healthcare that covers the ability to treat patients while also being affordable.  Unfortunately, as our video points out, government on the state and federal levels have not yet seen the importance of the NP.
