379 Assignment Potential EHS Field Experience/Work Sites 110 points possible

One of the most critical needs for someone wanting to work in the environmental health and safety (EHS) field is to obtain an internship or field experience. The benefits of obtaining an internship or field experience are many:

  • Insight for the student as to whether they would like to work in a particular area of EHS

  • Insight for the potential employer as to whether they would like to hire a student

  • Valuable hands-on knowledge, skills and abilities can be obtained

  • A valuable reference may be obtained for future employment

  • Networking to get your name out there for future employment

  • You must have 180 work hours documented for EH 495 to graduate with a BS in EHS

  • An internship is optional, but recommended for those with the BAS in EHS

This assignment is in three parts:

A) Identify and explain the EHS internships/field experiences/EHS related work of 20 different organizations.

B) Identify and explain why 3 out of the 20 organizations are your most likely choices for doing an internship/field experience or career.

C) Identify and explain about the role of the organization (what they do and how they do it): the mission, products, services. Identify and explain how you would improve yourself to be successful there in an internship and ultimately a career i.e. education, skills, certifications

NOTE: If you are already employed in EHS, look at this assignment as what potential employers that you might want to work for in the future.  Also, how you can attain better knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) for greater success in the future.  Don't look back, look forward!

Part A (80 pts. Possible)

You are to locate and identify at least 20 different prospective agencies, industries or firms that would have the potential for an internship or field experience in a field related to environmental health and safety. A place you might want to work in EHS. In addition, you must email or phone these agencies or organizations to inquire about a potential EHS internship or job. If the website clearly identifies they have an on-going opportunity for an EHS related internship or job, you do not have to contact a person directly. Below is a sample paragraph you can use to introduce yourself and ask questions, if they do not have an ongoing EHS internship or job. This will be a search for you to locate and identify those who have EHS related needs i.e. they have an EHS related program or need EHS related work done. They may be local, state, national or worldwide organizations or industries. The preference is for you to identify a mix of local, area states and national contacts. Think of this list as a way to start your search for a place to have a potential internship or field experience or career. This is a list of potential contacts for the future to check to see if they have any EHS related internship or field experience opportunities. This is also the start of you identifying potential future EHS related employers. Fill in the following table completely with all of the information required in the header to get the point(s):

Sample email or phone message to the contact about an internship with an organization:

I am a student in the Environmental Health and Safety BS degree program with Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri. In my degree plan, I am required to have an internship or field experience in an environmental health and/or safety related field. I was wondering if you have employees that work in environmental health and/or safety? Would you consider having a student do an internship or field experience in the area of environmental health and/or safety with your organization? I appreciate any information or assistance you can provide.

Thank you

Your name

*Note: If they should ask how much time you need for an internship or field experience you need 180 hours to obtain the needed minimum 2 credit hours, but 90 hours would earn you 1 credit hour.

*Note: A field experience may be working on a project or projects they are needing done in the field of environmental health and/or safety. This shows you could provide value to the organization and not just doing a job shadow (which would be OK).
