Yaze:

Motivation refers to an action that influences behavior and, consequently, a specified outcome is achieved. It is important that leaders motivate their staff because when workers are motivated, productivity is higher. As a result, organizations achieve higher levels of output. Of the three content motivation theories, I prefer the Hierarchy of needs theory because it focuses on the needs of employees as well. Thus, employees feel appreciated and cared for. The theory requires leaders to meet the low-level needs before they meet the others (Lussier & Achua, 2015). Motivation should first fulfill the needs of employees starting with psychological needs and finish with the highest level of needs which is self-actualization.

Of the three motivation theories, prefer the equity theory because it is fair to both the employer and the employee. According to the equity theory, workers are motivated if their input equals their output. Therefore, employers are encouraged to compensate their staff members accordingly otherwise, the workers might fail to deliver (Lussier & Achua, 2015). In line with that, if employees are over-awarded they are more likely to increase their productivity. If there is inequality, especially if workers are underpaid, they are likely to correct the balance by being less productive. As such when employers use this theory they are likely to be conscious of salaries, wages and bonuses.

Although all these motivation theories are relevant, I find that the expectancy theory resonates most with me. The theory states that people become more motivated if they think they will achieve a target and get the expected rewards. This motivation theory allows me to set realistic goals and plan accordingly. One of the techniques I plan to use in future is the normative leadership model because it allows the user to select the most appropriate leadership style for a given situation.

Alyss:

Out of the three content motivation theories, I feel that I prefer Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. I prefer this theory because I relate to this theory more so than the others. The 5 categories listed under the Hierarchy of Needs are psychological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization needs. The 5 needs listed are the reason that I prefer the Hierarchy of Needs theory. I believe that personally, all 5 of these are needs that I need in my daily life. The Hierarchy of Needs addresses all aspects of needs in one’s life. Thus, being the reason I prefer this more.

Out of the three process motivation theories, I feel that I prefer the Goal-Setting theory. I prefer this theory because I have found that this theory is what works best for me in terms of motivation and accomplishing tasks. When I have a goal set, I feel like a failure if I do not accomplish that set goal. So, setting goals almost always will guarantee that I am going to meet it. There is no theory that is “better” than the other, it is just what works for each individual.

My motivation theory aligns most with goal-setting theories. I am a person that gets motivated by the satisfaction of accomplishing a task and making others proud as a result of that task being accomplished. Ultimately, I know that I cannot make everyone proud. However, my motivation comes from the idea of making myself and others proud of the goals being accomplished.

In my future career, I plan to use intrinsic motivators. These consist of achievement, recognition, challenge and advancement. I feel that intrinsic motivators apply the most to my future career. For example, in my career I need to be recognized. I need to achieve. I need challenges, especially in order to advance. Wherever my career takes me, I feel that these will always be the most important motivators. Techniques such as commission and recognition is also something extremely important that I plan to use. According to an article, “Commission is popular in most sales jobs because their responsibilities are heavily tied to a company’s revenue goals” (Kalish, 2019). Commission is a technique that many employers use because it helps reach their goals, while providing incentives to the workers. Then, workers work harder to reach their commission goal while the employers are reaching their goals too.
