Claude Monet was considered to be the father of Impressionism and the leader of a group of artists based in Paris that began the French Impressionist movement. The name Impressionism came from a painting by Monet. These impressionist painters were unique in creating a new approach and style in art. Monet’s style involved much about the outdoors and nature as he tried to capture nature as it appeared to him in that moment. He was intrigued to use many colors in his art work and enjoyed experimenting with light and shadow as they reflected the time of day in which he chose to paint his desired scenery. Claude Monet’s unique style about nature not only influenced the Impressionist movement, but also inspired other artists through his work.

Born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France, Claude Oscar Monet’s passion for art began at an early age (The Art Story, n.d.). His father was a successful grocer and his mother was a singer who sadly passed when he was only 15 years old (The Art Story, n.d.). The coastline of Northern France is what began Monet’s love for nature as he would “often run away from school to go for walks along the cliffs and beaches” (The Art Story, n.d.). Monet started his artistic career by drawing caricatures which gained him a certain notoriety (Claude Monet, n.d.). He was then influenced by his friend Eugene Boudin, who “encouraged him to paint outdoors, and this en plein air technique changes Monet’s concept of how art could be created” (The Art Story, n.d.).

Monet began his art studies in Paris in Suisse Academy, but his studies were put on a temporary hold as he was sent to Algeria to serve in the military (Claude Monet, n.d.). His studies led him to create some artwork that was accepted into the Paris Salon exhibitions but “his style kept him at odds with the jurors” where some of his work was rejected (The Art Story, n.d.). His unique style influenced Monet and friends with similar interest to organize their very own exhibition, which became to be known as the first Impressionist exhibition (The Art Story, n.d.). These impressionist painters were known to create a new approach and style in art which therefore led to the start of the French Impressionist improvement. This style involved a new perspective of “art for art, the truth of a painting is relative because it depends on the subject who paints it and the spectator who looks at it” (Claude Monet, n.d.). Monet enjoyed to create his artwork in his garden, where he claims to gain his most inspiration for what he creates. Observing light at various times of the day was a key characteristic of Monet’s inspiration as “his purpose was always to seize a changing effect; he adopted the practice to paint the same subject under different conditions of light” (Claude Monet, n.d.). Although Monet passed on December 5, 1926, his style of impressionism “continues to be one of the most popular artistic movement as evidenced by its massive popular consumption in the form of calendars, postcards and posters” (The Art Story, n.d.).

Monet’s unique style is what led him to become the father of Impressionism. This Impressionist movement created an art style in which was based on the impression of how they saw outdoor images and involved the use of many colors. Between his love for outdoors and nature and his encouragements from his friend Boudin, Monet began this style of painting at an early age. His failures and rejections to art exhibitions did not stop Monet from his passions of impressionist paintings. His passions set flames toward leading a group of painters who all had an interest for the impressionist style of painting and began the French Impressionist movement. His work along with the others involved in this movement were greatly appreciated by the public later on in the years which also drew much attention to critics.

Before reaching his fame and ultimate success through his art work, Monet’s paintings did not fulfil a good source of income which led him to debt and therefore asked friends to borrow money to keep a roof over his family. Once his name and artwork started to spread and draw attention to many, Monet’s painting were not only sold around Europe, but his artwork also reached attention in the United States where they were sold as well. Being one of the founders of impressionism, his work has inspired so many people, from artist with similar styles to others with no artistic background, that Monet has been known to be one of most expensive artists. While the price of paintings has varied depending on the scenery and the conditions of light, the average price of his work was worth to be approximately $7, 200 million.

Claude Monet’s inspiration for his painting began at a young age when he would enjoy walking the coastline of Northern France. He was fascinated by the oceans, cliffs and beaches during these walks. His motivation to stray away from drawing caricatures to begin painting the outdoors was Eugene Boudin. He was a famous painter who was known for painting landscape. Boudin provided Monet with a perspective on art that not only stayed with Monet during his years as an artist but also encourage him to begin his passion of painting his impressions of outdoor scenery.

All in all, Claude Monet became to be known as one of the most valued and inspirational artists of all time. His unique style of artwork based on the impression of how he saw outdoor images at different times of the day using many colors is what led this artist to begin the French Impressionist movement. Monet’s rebellious attitude to ignore his rejections and follow his dreams not only inspired his fellow colleagues to join this movement, but also inspired others around the world to draw from the heart and mind. Claude Monet will forever be recognized as an exceptional artist as his art work is still sold today.
