The vulnerable population group that I chose to talk about was people who are bullied. The purpose of this discussion was to analyze how the three types of justice affect the health of people who are bullied, and possible ways to enhance social justice as an advanced practice nurse (APRN). The three types of justice are social (equal benefits and burdens in society), distributive (equal access to goods and services), and market (acquiring goods and services according to the guidelines of entitlement) (De Chesnay & Anderson, 2020). The importance of addressing bullying is the profound impact that it can have on society. According to De Chesnay & Anderson, (2020) approximately 40% of school shooters were bullied, and 25% of children bullied become suicidal.
When thinking about how justice in general impacts a person being bullied, it is because it so often leads to anger and aggression and feelings of unfairness (Einarsen, 2011). Social justice demands that all members of a certain society should be equally safe from a physical and psychological standpoint (Smart, 2017). When a person experiences bullying, they are not safe physically or mentally, and they are more likely to be seen in an emergency room with a physical injury, be it from an attempt to self-harm or because they were harmed by their aggressor. An example of distributive justice is unequal pay (Einarsen, 2011). When a person is bullied in the workplace they may be paid less or given less benefits than another person that does the exact same job. This can affect the person’s health because lower income or lack of benefits influences a person’s access to adequate health care. Lastly, market justice affects the health of victims of bullying because contrary to how social justice focuses on all members of society, market justice focuses on the individual (Budetti, 2008). For a person that is being bullied and may find themselves socially isolated, market justice can limit their access to health care further isolating them by minimizing their options.
One way to enhance social justice as APRNs is to learn how to identify patients that belong to a vulnerable population, and then advocate for them to have equal access and quality health care. Enhancing cultural competence and providing efficient and compassionate care also help enhance social justice. Regarding the bullied population, an APRN can enhance social justice for them by becoming skilled in identifying signs of bullying such as self-isolation, depression, aggression and anger.
