Introduction

Nursing philosophy is not just another academic requirement but is a preparation of a student to the future career of nursing. It constitutes of a statement which is often written down concerning a personal belief about nursing (Evans, 2020). It comes down to one’s personality and interests. What makes you want to be a nurse and not any other profession. It is about what you like about nursing. Students may wonder why is it important to write a belief down because it is something that you feel every day. Writing the philosophy down will help me as a future nurse to remind me why I started nursing and what I love about it. There are days that I will be overwhelmed by work and a reminder of why I joined nursing will really help. It will help me deliver the best care to patients according to my beliefs. Also, as I advance in my career, my philosophy will also grow because of the experiences that I will have had in the field (MAS, 2018). Therefore a nursing philosophy is beneficial in the lives of the people that I will be providing care for and their families.

Assumptions

In every day practice, there are assumptions that occur about the patients, health, environment, nursing and the relationship between all these variables. My assumptions concerning all these variables is that they all affect the wellness of a patient, for example if a person is exposed to a healthy environment then their chances of getting sick or getting a disease is lesser than one exposed in an unhealthy environment. Health status also differs from one person to another. My philosophy will help me deliver the best care to the patients as well as ensuring that I respect the wishes of the patient and the family. Integrity, ethics, equity and bias will factor in my assumptions because they will help me differentiate between assumptions and reality (MAS, 2018).
