Case study: Google, The Quest to Balance Privacy with Profits

The case looks at Google and its desire for quality amidst privacy concerns and the profits the company makes from the information users feed to Google. Google gained a lot of popularity fast because of its ease of use for users. Over 2 billion searches are performed through Google's search engine every day. Google collects a lot of personal information from what users ask about, their location and the android platform. Google has faced a lot of ethical issues, like most large companies (Angwenyi, 2017). It had issues with its mantra "Done be evil" after allowing the Chinese government to censor some of Google's sites. Google's largest concern at the moment is privacy and the profits the company makes from collecting user data. Google's ten core principles show the company's desire to be ethical in the web and technology industry. Google is always being accused of questionable activity, from antitrust issues to copyright infringement by the European community as well as regulators in the United States (Angwenyi, 2017). Google tries to be transparent, although the ethics regarding the collection of data even with users' agreeing to the privacy will always have many ethical grey areas. Google must do more to convince its consumers that they can trust the company.
