According to Stevens & Silver (2015), a strategic plan is essential to the success and future of every organization, because it contains the vision, mission, and core values of the entity. The organization’s vision defines where they are headed, while the mission statement shows how they intend to achieve this future that they aspire. The core values of the organization are equally important. They contribute to the formation of the organizational culture because they explain what is expected of the employees. The purpose of this journal is to analyses the strategic plan of Trinity Health, discuss its mission, vision, and core values, as well as any improvements necessary (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018).

State your choice of HCO and explain why it interests you.

I have selected the Saint Joseph Health System (Trinity Health) for this Journal as the healthcare organization of choice. The facility was selected because my mother works there, and she has high praises for the HCO. The organization is committed to helping the less privileged in the society, and I have come to believe in their core values, vision, and mission. The HCO has existed for over 160 years as a nonprofit organization, and it was founded by the sisters and handmaids of the Holy Cross. The HCO has grown to be the largest catholic facility in northern Indiana. Their mission is not limited to healthcare services but also to charity and donations to help improve society's wellbeing. The community has been transformed into a healthier place through the efforts of Saint Joseph (Excellence in Care Experience. 2019).

State the organization’s vision, mission, and values statements

Vision; “As a mission-driven innovative health organization, we will become the national leader in improving the health of our communities and each person we serve. We will be the most trusted health partner for life.

Mission; “We, Trinity Health, serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities.

Core values include; commitment to the poor, reverence, justice, integrity, safety, and stewardship.

The mission of the HCO is aligned with the beliefs and the values of the organization that have always been to help and bring healing to the poor. The values and vision are actively communicated to the staff, and that is why they have managed to carry their values for the years they have existed. The HCO has concentrated on the following five areas that support their vision, mission, and core values;

  • We are offering services efficiently and cost-effectively.

  • Prioritize on patient safety

  • Innovate and introduce world-class technology

  • Create a healing atmosphere within and outside the HCO

  • Create and campaign for environmental responsibility.

These five aspects of their services drive their vision and mission. The organization offers health care services to both those who can afford insurance those who cannot, which, together with their core values, have brought them success (Stevens, & Silver, 2015).

Discuss whether the organization’s purpose and priorities are clearly defined

The priorities and purpose of Trinity Health is well-defined, especially on their online site. Their focus is to heal the body, mind and spirit, and they also want to excel in health care experiences by building and achieving trusted health care partnerships for life. The latter priority is defined and achieved through partnership with other community outreach programs that enhance healthcare services for society. The primary purpose of Trinity Health is to promote healing in the community, not just in the physical form, but also in the mind and spirit. The latter is achieved through religious means that the HCO pursues through the church states Excellence in Care Experience. (2019).

According to Excellence in Care Experience. (2019) the church has played an essential role for the HCO because it offers support through donations and staff provision. In northern Indiana, Trinity Health is well known for its commitment to the community by offering free programs that benefit both those who can afford insurance covers and those that cannot. During the Christmas holiday season, Trinity Health holds one of the most significant events in the community where they offer food and clothing support to the needy families in the region (Bryson, 2018). The event is a big deal for the less fortunate because they get enough supplies to last them during the winter. The HCO has partnered with the marines where they support the Toys for Tots program. These are just some of the initiatives the Trinity Health has undertaken that define their priority of partnering for life.

Trinity Health also hosts blood drives every two months, which helps in maintaining its blood bank. In September, the organization offers flue shots at their facility for free. These two separate events are essential in fulfilling their purpose of promoting healing in the community. They extent this purpose by assisting individuals in the community qualify and sign up for Medicaid initiative (Excellence in Care Experience. 2019). They extend their helping hand to immigrants living in the community by helping them access emergency services, among other benefits. Trinity Health also offers financial assistance to members of the community whose income is below the federal poverty line. The HCO has disease prevention and management classes that are open to the community each month, as well as parenting classes for first-time moms. Throughout the year, Trinity Health has several events, such as raffles, and all are geared towards helping the community heal. The purpose and priority of the HCO are defined both in writing on their website and inactions.

Discuss whether the mission statement separates the HCO from competing organizations.

The statement given by Trinity Health Systems missions separates the organization from the competition because it the only existing non -profit organization in the area with staunch Catholics. They are devoted to helping the poor and underserved. They solely give financial aid programs, and they also work hand in hand with Medicaid services and centers for Medicare (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). Due to their collaboration with the church and their close relationship with the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the organization can provide essential services that align with the community's needs. They aim to offer community support through their outreach programs. Due to their commitments, they have gained people's trust; thus, whenever people see the saint Joseph name or logo, they are at ease knowing they are in good hands. Trinity Health employees feel contented working there since they know they are providing quality healthcare (Stevens, & Silver, 2015).

Ideas for improving the mission statement in terms of aligning priorities with its products and services.

Most HCOs have a history that is characterized by challenges, accomplishments, policies, and objectives it has achieved. The mission statement should have some of these characteristics. However, it should not dwell too much on history. The mission statement of Trinity Health is outdated because it reflects on their history back when it was a church states Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, (2018). The HCO will need to incorporate the ‘now’ into their mission. The organization will have to create a balance between their faith and wellbeing of the community in its mission statement. The mission statement is also vague in that it does not detail how the facility will help the community heal. The statement should affirm to the community that the HCO is innovating and creating new and better processes. The mission statement should at least mention how they are offering quality care beyond the industry’s standards. The mission does not offer the pathway of the HCO into the future, making it shallow (Bryson, 2018).

Could the current vision statement be utilized to motivate the organization’s workforce?

Saint Joseph's Health system's current vision is what motivates their staff. The HCO's success depends highly on its solid vision that supports its future. The vision should explicitly explain how to achieve the goals that have been set. Working towards the same goals motivate employees since they can monitor their progress. For example, in Saint Joseph hospital every 8 am, the read the mission statement, which is followed by a word of prayer, reminds every employee of the goals and commitment towards the patients in the hospital (Excellence in Care Experience. 2019). It also helps the employees to understand the importance of teamwork to achieve desired goals. In my opinion, due to their values and strong belief of the organization, each employee works towards improving patient care. In 2018 they won an award of the best place to work in Northern Indian.

Discuss whether the statement of the current value considers the values of multiple participants, such as the community, employees, shareholders, and customers.

Yes, the core values statement considers the stakeholders. Reverence, in their context, means that they will honor the dignity of their customers. Commitment to the poor and their actions prove that they serve the community. Stewardship means that they are accountable for financial, human, and natural resources, which means that they consider the shareholders and the community. Integrity and safety show that they will uphold their oath of providing top-quality care to their patients. Justice ensures that the HCO promotes the idea of common good and sustainability, which means that all employees are treated fairly and justly state excellence in the care experience. (2019).

Conclusion

We can conclude that the organization's current value, mission statements, and vision must fit its objectives and goals. A vision statement is essential for an organization since it outlines where the organization is striving to achieve soon, strategies that it will use to ensure that it gets there. "The vision statement is supposed to be unique, visual, and inspiring; it should be able to create a mental image of the hospital at a future point." The employees of an organization should understand the mission and vision and work on implementing them so the organization can reach its goal. Ethics and values should guide employees' actions claim Stevens, & Silver, (2015). This is always reflected in the history of an organization. Saint Joseph Health Systems' mission, vision, and values differentiate it from other health systems.
