Keep in mind that because this is extra credit, we will be grading rather strictly . 30 pt s Questio n 1 W e have considered in this course several languages constructed for TV shows, movies, and books, among others. There are loads of fictional works that have constructed languages, even if they are as simple as the vocabulary of an alien planet or the names of the characters in a work set in some imagined place.

In this extra credit assignment, you will be asked to collect and analyze a constructed language dataset from a work of fiction NOT already discussed in this class.

You will first have to choose some fictional work (e.g., a novel, a short story , a video game, etc.) we haven't discussed. Once you have that, you can do any ONE of the following. Note that the options build (option 3 includes everything for option 2, which includes everything for option 1), so the possible points per option build as well, as indicated at the end of each option. So, if you choose option 3, you can get a maximum of 15 points, and that will happen if you provide a list of 20 words, all correctly transcribed, and a correct inventory for that list of words. Do not choose more than one option; we will grade only one option.

Options:

1) Collect 20 words from the work. Submit the list of words and the source you got them from. [5 points possible] 2) Collect 20 words from the work and transcribe them in the IPA. You'll probably have to use your best guess about the transcription. Submit the list of words, your IP A transcription, and the source you got them from. [10 points possible] 3) Collect 20 words from the work, transcribe them in the IPA, and use them to figure out the inventory of the language (at least for the words you have).
