The Pre-Venture Feasibility Analysis: The Andrea Kaneb Case (NA0445)

  1. If you had been in Kaneb’s position and you had decided to continue pursuing your new venture, which of the alternative approaches for addressing each of the most critical issues would you have implemented?

The most critical issue faced by Andrea is regarding the timing of her actions. About the actions she needs to complete before she launches Parlay with $400K investment.

In Kaneb’s position, I would have done the following:

  1. Understand FDA and FCC norms to ensure that my business idea abides by the norms and regulations.

  2. Chalk out the clear value chain and identify the components that will be outsourced.

  3. Arrange meetings with component manufacturers to understand the process, timelines, requirements etc.

  4. Since the mobile application manufacturers and Bluetooth companies are important stakeholders, arrange talks with them and develop partnerships.

  5. Since I lack experience and network, it is extremely important for me to rope in people who are as enthusiastic about the idea as I am, at this stage itself. Working on the above idea and launching the product needs tremendous effort, network and partnerships. I would be open to recruiting additional partners.

  1. As you reflect on the dramatic career transition Kaneb was considering, what factors might have inspired her to decide to launch Parlay, and what concerns might have given her pause? How does Kaneb’s situation inform your own thinking about a potential career transition post-MBA?

Her own struggle to find the right hearing device specially for noisy enviornments made her cognizant of the opportunity for such a user friendly, functional and economical device. In Andrea’s case it seems to be more of product passion than entrepreneur passion. Her goal of helping hearing-challenged people converse in noisy environments inspired her to take up the project of “Parlay” beyond her MBA coursework and plan its launch in the real world.

The major concerns she faced were regarding the lack of network and mentoring since unlike her classmates she could not build such networks during her career. She also had no expertise in venture finance and software development which would be required in setting up the “Parlay” venture. What might have paused her was the fact that all 3 of her project partners were going to pursue alternative employment opportunities after MBA and she would not have a team to fall back upon.

Kaneb’s position is a reminder that post MBA while opting for a career transition, it would be of utmost importance to understand the consumer needs, industry, market and competitors. It is also important to have some cross functional knowledge and to build networks and get mentorship throughout one’s career because that gives you a great leverage when you take up things that are new to you.
