Reviews (5% of Final Grade) I. Purpose

The purpose of the Reviews is to review two existing Websites and write about the site design and structure. By reviewing Websites, you will gain a better understanding of the different design styles and you can use what you learn to help you design your own Website at the end of this semester. The Website that you design at the end of the semester will be the same company type that you choose for this assignment (i.e., Commercial, Government, or Non-Profit) so you should choose a company type that you are interested in.

II. Steps
  1. Pick one type of company from the three Project Company Types listed in Column 1.

  2. Find two sample Websites for Company Type that you have chosen. The Websites may be the ones provided in Column 2, or ones that you find on your own. For example, if you select “Non-Profit Association”, two appropriate Websites would be http://www.freecongress.org and http://www.unitedway.org. Or, you could have included a Website not shown in Column 2, such as http://www.aspca.org.

  3. For each Website, you will write a review of the Website and create a flowchart of the Website. Details are provided in Section III: Reviews Description.

  4. Submit your completed Reviews via Blackboard using the Assignments Tool (“Course Tools”  “Assignments”  follow the “Project 1: Review Paper” link).

III. Reviews Description

Part 1: Review for Website #1 and Website #2

At the beginning of the assignment, you will clearly state the type of company that you have chosen (i.e., Commercial, Government, or Non-Profit).

The text of the reviews will be single space (Font: New Times Roman; Font size: 12) describing the content of each site.

For each Website, your review will include the followings:

  • a brief Introduction that provides an overview of the Website

  • a description of the use of Color and Logos, the Text Content (Mission Statement, Department/Services, Bios, etc.), the Fonts and font sizes, the type of Navigation used, (e.g., menus, bars, tabs, etc.), and the accessibility of the Website that can accommodate people with disabilities (e.g., accessibility-related features and enhancements, existence of an Accessibility Statement, etc.), and more importantly, discuss how these elements accomplish unity/visual identity, balance/proximity, and contrast/focus (refer to Lecture #3).

  • If there is Animation, describe how it is used.

  • If the Website is based on a responsive web design (RWD), describe how it is used (i.e., how the layout and content adjust according to the device and screen sizes).

  • At the end, a summary of your own Final Design Comments on the Website design.

Each section of the paper will be clearly delineated with an underlined paragraph header as follows:

Introduction

Colors and Logos

Text Content

Fonts

Navigation

Accessibility

Animation (if appropriate)

Responsive Web Design

Final Design Comments

For each Website you will write at least one full page, for a minimum total of two written pages for this section.

Part 2: Flowchart for Website #1 and Website #2

The flowchart that you create for each Website will be at least 3 levels, but no more than 4 levels. (If the Website is too large and involves many levels, similar links/Web pages may be grouped to provide the overall structure of the Website. It is not required to cover every aspect and details of the site.) The Flowchart will follow the conventions described in the “Flowchart Guidelines” document available on Blackboard (in the “Project 1” folder). A sample flowchart is provided in the “Flowchart Example” document available on Blackboard (in the “Project 1” folder). For each Website you will create a minimum one-page flowchart for a total of two pages of flowcharts.

Note: Overall, the assignment will be two pages of reviews and two pages of flowcharts, for a minimum of four pages total.
