 Information Governance

The Health Information Management (HIM) field has proven to be very dynamic - ever changing and responding to influences and demands of government entities, the insurance industry, patient needs and others. HIM areas of expertise are sprouting up which include Information Governance, Population Health and Data Analytics to name a few.

In relation to the deployment of Electronic Records, healthcare is now being challenged by insurance plans to monitor and document items that are known to contribute to poor health, such as smoking, limited exercise, high fat diets, etc. and to incorporate education on health improvement so that patients might experience year over year improvements. Careers are sprouting up in data analytics, particularly in healthcare, because of the huge databases contained by electronic health records. There is a tremendous focus on identifying the data, gathering the data, analyzing the data and then making use of the data through education and program development. Program development might include healthy food cooking courses or yoga courses, as examples. It is responsible to use that data to educate and improve the health of the people - thereby impacting population health.

Utilizing health data allows medical practices to educate themselves prior to making treatment changes/modifications or medical equipment purchases...even facility expansion decisions can be directed by careful data analytics. In order to ensure that HIM has the needed data and information for both data analytics and population health, there must be a responsible process to manage the information - how it is obtained and entered, how it is stored, how it is accessed and retrieved from the electronic record, etc. Information Governance is the formulation of both policy and procedure to govern health information within a facility. This also includes the assurance of information integrity, availability and utilization of the information - again for informed and directed executive decisions such as building expansion, provider acquisition and even service discontinuation.
