Introduction

A pharmacist is a health worker who is specialized in medicine and its effective use. In most cases, a pharmacist usually gives drugs to the patients according to the prescription of the doctor. On the other hand, a certified nurse-midwife is an advanced-practice nurse who is registered. Certified nurse-midwives are health workers that are trusted in giving women an alternative or option to traditional midwives in terms of service delivery. The only difference between them and the traditional ones is that the certified nurse-midwives are trained and have a license to perform these tasks.

Pharmacists

This health worker deals majorly with drugs or medicines. The pharmacist plays a lot of roles in the healthcare field among them is ensuring that the medicines supplied are governed by the law. Their other roles include ensuring that the patient has been given the right prescription of the medicines, giving patients advice about drugs, and ensuring that the patients are supplied with drugs. A pharmacist gives the patient directives on how to take the medicines prescribed to them. The also informs the patients on the possible reactions of the prescribed medicines with their bodies’ systems (Lambert, 2014). Most of the pharmacist responds to the patients' questions concerning medicines and gives them clarity. The pharmacist also ensures that the patient has been given the right medicine prescription by the doctor. This helps in avoiding the risks associated with giving the patient the wrong medicine.

Certified nurse-midwives

These healthcare providers play a vital duty in the health of women. They serve women right from adolescence, during the pregnancy period and even at childbirth. These healthcare workers also help women who are beyond their menopause stage. Some of their roles are helping in baby deliveries and the provision of newborn care. They do tests on women, especially the diagnostic ones. These healthcare providers also examine women physically. The last and most important role of certified nurse-midwives is to attend to the pregnant women. The certified nurse-midwives are very essential people in the process of childbirth. Most of the women feel secure and safe being in the hands of these healthcare providers during the process of childbirth. Expectant mothers are well attended to by the nurse-midwives when they visit the health care facilities. These workers have a great task of ensuring that the expectant mothers are well advised on the ways of nursing their pregnancy until childbirth.

Comparison

Pharmacists and certified nurse-midwives are essential healthcare providers in a healthcare facility. These workers both works in a healthcare environment setup. The main difference is that they work in different fields. The pharmacist is majorly trained to deal with the medicines and related matters while the nurse-midwife training is more practical than theoretical. The midwives' conduct with the patient is very close as compared to the pharmacist. Unlike the nurse midwives, the pharmacist may not understand the patient’s problem deeply. This is because he only gives the prescription and medicine based on the laboratory test results. The midwives, on the other hand, will personally conduct a diagnostic test or perform a physical examination on the patient. The practice requirement of a pharmacist is quite different from those of nurse-midwives (Plake, 2016). Lastly, the above-discussed healthcare providers underwent different training on how to perform their duties. This makes them relate to patients differently.
