What kind of communication needs to occur between management, employees, and the change agent(s)?

Today, Target must change the way they do business to get ahead of the other big retailers. The new age of technology has taken a toll on how business operate and in 2015, “Target CEO Brian Cornell and members of his leadership team presented the strategist that will transform the retailer’s business”, (Target.com, 2015). The culture of how target do business will forever change to the supply and demand of consumers. That is why the leadership team create, develop and implanting the new way of doing business by creating the shopping experience for consumer for both online and mobile. To make this a successful transition, the communication between the change agent (leadership team) and management must be effectively being planned, control, organize, and training down to the associates that actually provided the experience to the consumers. Management within target are the eyes and ears that see the everyday business operations. To make this a successful transition, effective communication must be in place to make it work from the leadership team down to the staff that work on the floor at every target location. Today, every time you shop at target, the employees will make sure that you have a great experience whether in store, online or mobile, the way target is doing business has change to accommodate the need of the consumer get ahead of other big retailers.

Communication is an important part of life, and vital for the organization, the way we communicate will help achieve success, and provide positive or negative outcome. In the same way, when change occurs is hard to communicate, and if we don’t use the appropriate way, this can alter the behavior requiring some additional effort for the organizational change like acquisition, restricting, or adjusting the organizational process. Effective communication plays an imperative role in the organizational change, and for this reason two questions need be considered.

  1. Are the employees motivated to change?

  2. Are the employees equipped with the ability to change?

These two questions are very important to help with the attempts of the organizational change. In the same way, is also important take in consideration six important steps in communicating organizational change.

  • Creating a communication plan that prioritize empathy when change occurs, because employees always have questions, and is important to provide a clear idea as change agents planning the communication with patience and understanding.

  • Is important develop a clear, and consistent message through the organization, and repeat consistently for better understanding, because with the change, employees want to know what is happening, why and how this change will affect them, for this reason contradictory statements create confusion, and employees will consider leaving if they are not well-informed. Also, is important to prepare the messages with talking points, and FAQ questions to help employees be guided through the conversation.

  • When communicating be careful on how is delivered the information, and to whom is delivered, to avoid minimize the chances of information being

leaked. Informing managers and supervisors first before share with employees, can help to keep confidence within their circle of influence.

  • Never under-estimate the power of face-to face communication during changes, and whenever is possible conduct meetings in person or town-hall to communicate changes. Also, use appropriate channels to communicate consistently across the company through email, social media, intranet, website, and through direct mail, flyers or other media that can be used by the organization, because employees want to hear the changes from the source this help to provide trust and understanding on the news.

  • Use the right timing and pay attention to important dates, to plan communication accordingly to company deadlines, and proper schedule.

  • At last, after informing employees, be attentive to the feedback, engaging in a collaborative two ways dialogue, to be able to learn from each member. Furthermore, using surveys, or town-hall meetings are also opportunities for employees to comment and vote, and create involvement, and commitment, but also motivation between employees and changing agent.

Changes within any organizations sometime takes dramatic turn if not communicate effectively down the chain of command. Target has been collecting consumer data call “data mining”, (Cox, S. M., & Harper, M., 2013) to use for the changes they implemented to make their company successful. That is why Target today are among the top success big box retailers today, because they way changes take place is by effectively communicating from the leadership team, management team and all down to the employees who provided the best experience to the consumers. Whenever there is a change, the change agent is responsible for making sure that everyone in the organization are properly notified, trained, owned, and execute the change. Change agent are the facilitators of the change. Target is successful because of the change agent effectively facilitating the change to provide online, and mobile shopping experience available for the consumer to dive in.

Six tips for communicating organizational change;

Identify at least two proactive steps the organization needs to take today to avert possible problems in the future.

With Target being an American retail corporation only, Target could be more proactive with making international relations and customers. Building these relations start at home with the American stores. Teaching employees culture diversity and being able to understand what other cultures want and need. This must be practiced while also learning about the other cultures. Learning about other cultures will help Target improve with trying to gain international customers. The second proactive step is that Target could use the three P method. Predict, prevent, and plan.

1. Predict

For an organization to be proactive in future assurances, it must be able to have foresight. Dynamic organizations must first develop a prediction of what could adversely affect their operations in the future. Such organizations are rarely affected by dangerous occurrences because they prepare for them in advance. Organizations should always learn to anticipate future events for them to be more proactive. This helps them to understand things and look into the patterns that exist in business operations. Business organizations use logic and creativity to ensure they have accurate predictions for the future. They do this to come up with scenarios of how the events could occur.

2. Prevent

After predicting the events, organizations try to exert their power to find a way of preventing them from occurring. They also come up with different ways they would use to overcome such an event if they

Occur. They should avoid problems that may see hindsight to others who claim such problems are unavoidable. Avoiding such events allows organizations to feel powerful when the challenges approach. Prevention of future problems helps the organizations to take control over them before they grow into big problems.

3. Plan

The next step may involve planning of the unforeseen events. This consists of avoiding one-step action. Instead, it is a step used to think out and look ahead of the circumstances considering the long-term consequence. This step also involves bringing the future into the present to enable the organizations to plan on what they can do to ensure a better tomorrow. However, all decisions involve a chain of events that lead to conclusions of where the organization anticipates achieving in the future.

Identify and explain the most significant obstacle that might be encountered by each of the following: management, employees, the change agent(s), and other significant stakeholders?

According to Martin, Dixon & Nau it is the characteristics of Target that will show success of the Social Movement. The most effective way is market pressure. Negative stock returns are the most effective. Organizations must change internally. The resistance to change will be subject to extreme pressure. Target could resist the pressure by social movement and Management of Target could accept a drop in stock value by continuing to ignore demands. Media attention and boycotts are tactics that are used to pressure changes.

“Those who control the destiny of a corporation do so not primarily for their own benefit but rather for the benefit of a wide range of groups and individuals having an interest in the affairs of the corporation.” (Taylor & Francis 2006)

Board members, managers, stockholders, stakeholders, and employees who ignore business ethics or how people should behave, leave the members to decide what they need to follow to conduct business. Social responsibility is linked to success in the market. Stakeholders are demanding it.

What sacrifices might need to be made to accomplish the goals/objectives of this organization?

In order for better customer service along with higher profits and positive work environment sacrifices such as eliminating registers with more self-serve registers. This will redirect staff to being on the floor to help customers find product along with stocking at a faster rate. Focusing on the “areas with newness and differentiation.” (target, 2017)
