When it comes to motivating employees to work at their highest level to create a great work environment which also allows the business to be successful. So having all of these variables work together to maintain a positive work environment is key in a business’s success. For business owners, it is also key to find a way to increase the motivation of the employees for them to come in and work hard, work well with others, and have excellent customer service skills so that the business starts to build a reputation of a reliable business. So with that being said we must look at the basic needs of an employee and find out what makes them tick and what makes them want to be successful. Is it time off, more money, better incentives, or the possibility or more promotions?

As a business owner, I know that taking care of the employees that take care of me has got to be my number one priority. With that being said I have to realize that the things that matter to them are the things that matter to me. So to start I would put into the policy that employees have paid time off for their birthdays as well as anniversaries for those that are married. This is a tactic used in a few of the organizations I have been a part of in the past and has been proven to make an employee feel a real part of the team. Now, this takes a large amount of oversite by the supervisor so in organizations where one supervisor is in charge of a large group of subordinates it can be a difficult task. This is why in my business model I would ensure that there were multiple teams of small groups of people to ensure that these teams build cohesion and learn to work together. Having teams with one supervisor and too many subordinates allow employees to not feel a part of the team or that their hard work goes overlooked and having small teams will allow subordinates to see that their hard work will pay off, and in the end making these employees feel like they are a part of the team.

Simple things like having a day off here or there is one thing, but along with feeling a part of the team, one must feel that their hard work and success will pay off with something more substantial like a promotion. Promotions mean things like more money on a weekly or monthly basis. As well as more incentives such as better healthcare, vacation time, and also giving them more responsibility. This will help fulfill these employees' safety and social needs as it comes from Marlow’s hierarchy of needs (apus.brightspace.com). Having the ability to break down the employees into different levels of responsibility is vital to do this and may not be reasonable for some business models, but if possible this is the way I would build mine. When employees see a way to progress and fulfill some more needs and the ability to doing this they want more than just simply meet the needs of their life will ensure that they work hard and commit to the organization.

One way to assist with promotions within this company is to maintain an evaluation system were evaluating employees and supervisors quarterly with a submitted annual evaluation would be read by all the supervisors above the rated employee. This would allow high-level supervisors to be able to look across a broad population of employees to see who has been working above their level already or how has the potential to work at levels above their current position. This will keep an honest and health competition throughout the workforce where employees will need to do better and work more efficiently to ensure their evaluation is being written in a positive light as opposed to being just lackluster.

In summary, my business model to increase motivation would have supervisors that are well intuned to the birthdays and anniversary dates of their subordinate where the employees would have some paid time off, there would be multiple levels of leadership to where an employee could progress annually, and in final there would be an evaluation system where employees and supervisors would be evaluated in many different levels of leadership to progress in the company. This would enable employees to be motivated to work hard as well as motivate others on their team to work hard and efficiently to progress in the company and make the company better on a daily basis.
