Planning in Healthcare

Planning is one of the most crucial tools for guidance in all organizations. Strategic planning describes a systematic process that involves documentation of how an organization plans to advance from its current situation to a better future situation. It also involves comprehensive decision-making activities taken by an organization to guide its overall structure. The relevance of the strategic planning process depends on the size and the complexity of the organizational levels. Organizations need to understand the conceptual aspects of strategic planning in order to implement it effectively (Perera & Peiro, 2012). If some mission-critical aspects are not considered, there is a possible failure in implementing strategic planning effectively.

Planning is a crucial strategy in managing the competitive environment of a business. With proper planning, organizations can control their business environments through strategic management and implementation. According to Jeseviciute-Ufartiene (2014), planning is considered a creative action for the future of any business in project implementation, programming and monitoring of tasks. Planning enables managers to organize individuals as well as resources effectively, as it gives them the confidence to lead others into achieving their strategic goals.

In most healthcare organizations today, there is a need for more value-based approaches and patient-eccentric planning as most healthcare organizations’ current systems still apply older strategic planning models. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities need to adjust their healthcare strategies to keep up with the current market trends and dynamic approaches to patient care services. It is crucial for healthcare organizations to understand how strategic planning is positively related to organizational performance in employee and patient satisfaction as well as its overall productivity (Esfahani et al., 2018). Moreover, numerous findings indicate that a clearly defined organizational culture, resource planning, process management, and employees, as well as customer management systems, influence the success of strategic plans in healthcare organizations.

The lack of a proper enterprise resource planning system in a healthcare organization will have numerous implications on the implementation strategy of the organization. An enterprise resource planning system provides a healthcare institution with comprehensive and integrated data for process management and value creation from client data. Without proper patient management systems and logistics, patient satisfaction cannot be achieved, and this has a significant impact on organizational performance. Furthermore, if healthcare professionals do not base their systems on current market trends and technologies, this can lead to poor quality of patient care, medical errors as well as low patient satisfaction (Sanja, 2013). It is, therefore, critical for all healthcare professionals to make adequate use of the evolving technologies to maintain the efficiency of healthcare services they provide.
