The movie Coach Carter is based on a true story about young poverty male students who goes to Richmond High were 80 percent are more likely to go to jail than to college.  For that reason, he forces them to focus on their education to improve their quality of lives in the future. The social problem going on is that these young male adults are growing up in unsafe neighborhoods and basically must turn to the gangs and its violence just to maintain. Growing up in the poverty weighs in on a person life decision which result in how they turn out themselves. Coach Carter understands these students’ problems going on in their lives so do make a change he just doesn’t show them the overall morals of respect but helps them achieve good for themselves in the school system. In the movie Coach Carter teaches the team that a team is one, one must work together, one must strive for greatness, which the leads to the team learning how to open up and not think everyone is against you because in the streets that’s how they’re taught. Just overall Coach Carter is pushing his students to understand that how they grow up school is the only thing that can change how they live. And as my Professor stated in our class education is one of the best insurance policies for protecting an individual against living in poverty meaning best solution for one to gain a positive outcome out of poverty.

The movie “coach carter” relates to many social problems going on in the world today. One of the main social effects it has is poverty and how it affects the educational system and low-income communities. Also, another social problem it deals with is race, because of physical appearance and background they come from may portray a negative image to others which will cause the labeling affect.

Social Problem (Poverty and its effect on one and it’s education Chapter 2)

  • Poverty causes lack of income which causes lack of education and suitable living goods.

  • Poverty leads to social discrimination

  • Limited access to basic services

  • Causes people to fend for their own

Social Problem (Race/Racism Chapter 3)

  • This creates the idea in minority groups and social structures

  • Race creates discrimination in education

  • “People of color are majority but hold minority status because of income, wealth, and health outcome”-slides.

  • Racism leads to problems like police brutally and just freedom in general.

In Coach Carter you have problems throughout the movie like lack in education funds and teaching system. Also, discrimination against the African Americans and where they come from. Throughout the movie there are students who don’t have the access to limited basic needs so one turns to violence to make ends meet. Labeling one as in minority which creates problems to succeed in life.
