Main Aim

To Examine the Dynamics of the Livelihood of Fishing Communities in Rural Sierra Leone. A Case Study of Rural Boothe District, Southern Province.



Specific Objectives:

  1. To identify the types of fishing that are undertaken in the Bonthe Rural District;

  2. To identify the categories of people engaged in fishing activities in Bonthe Rural District;

  3. To discuss government policy on fishing and how it impacts fishing in Bonthe Rural District;

  4. To discuss the role of the various categories of people engaged in fishing in Bonthe Rural District;

  5. Discuss the social and economic impact of fishing on the Bonthe Rural District;

  6. To examine the challenges faced by people engaged in fishing in Bonthe Rural District;

  7. To suggest strategies that will improve: a) the quality of fishing, b) the lives of fishers and their families, and c) the impact of fishing on Bonthe Rural District.


Research Questions

The research seeks to answer the following questions:


  1. What are the fishing livelihood risks faced by fishers (fishermen/women) in rural communities in Sierra Leone and how do these risks impact on their output and welfare?

  2. What are the fishing markets and price risks and how do they affect the livelihood of the rural people in Sierra Leone?

  3. What are the health risks faced by fishing communities in rural Sierra Leone and how do they affect their livelihood?

  4. How does government policy and its implementation protect fishing groups in Bonthe Rural District?

  5. What are the coping strategies of fishing groups towards sustainable fisheries-livelihood development of rural Sierra Leone?
