Your research paper for the “economic policy brief” considers the historical and policy contexts for a specific country. You consider the economic development history, and important economic and political developments that have impacted business in a specific country. This analysis considers the national, regional, and international contexts and the impact on business within the country.

You will write and present a policy brief on the international economy history trends within one country among the following world regions:

  • North America (Canada, Mexico, USA) – chapter 13

  • EU and broader European neighborhood – chapter 14

  • Latin America and Africa – chapter 15

  • East Asia – chapter 16

  • China, India, and Middle East – chapter 17

Research paper (15% of class grade): The paper is to be submitted via Blackboard by July 31.

Friday, July 24: You may submit by email an optional outline or draft abstract/summary or introduction paragraphs. As the back page, include the Bibliography listing the references.

Your success will involve researching, outlining, and drafting the paper prior to submitting your final draft. These instructions include Content Requirements and Guidelines. The thorough completion of this research paper assignment requires taking into account the following.

Paper organization:

Length: The required length:

Bachelor’s programs: 2-3 pages (at least 6 references)

Master’s programs: 4-5 pages (at least 12 references total from 6 sources)

Double-spaced 11’/12’ font Times New Roman.

Please use appropriate research paper structure that includes the 5 parts/sections/topics. Each section may have several paragraphs (sub-topics) within it to address issues thoroughly.

Figures, Tables and Charts:

You may wish to include figures, tables, or charts, and please indicate the reference source including page number, if available, under each figure. Please use no more than 3 figures overall, maintain the emphasis on the quality of your writing.

There are to be references from the following six sources. Research the specific data and background as pertain to your country’s economy:

Please structure the Economic Brief as following this outline:

  1. Introduction

  • The historical and economic overview of the country that you choose

  • At what stage is this country’s economic development?

  • Discuss political leaders and public attitudes towards the economy and institutions?

  • The overview of your paper; include a thesis statement that summarizes the findings of your research

  1. Institutions: national and international

  • What are qualities of the economic development level of the country?

  • What international institutions are important to this country and why?

  • Why do trade policy and monetary policy matter for economic development?

  1. International Trade Trends

  • Participation in regional and global trade agreements/institutions

  • State/government influence in trade policy development (public sector)

  • Societal/business influence in trade policy development (private sector)

  • How does the exchange rate impact trade in the country (consider last twenty years)

  1. Monetary Policy

  • Currency arrangement (floating, managed, or fixed)

  • Balance of Payments (current account and capital/financial account) surplus or deficit

  • Policy concerns related to price stability (inflation/deflation) and economic growth (pursuit of full employment)

  1. Conclusions

  • Future concerns for international economics within the country and the region

  • What has been learned about economics, public policy, and business behavior

  • Potential for the country to participate in international cooperation in the future (trade and monetary)

Note on References:

You may use any professional referencing style as long as it is used consistently throughout the paper.

  1. References in the text are to have numbered footnotes and/or parenthetical references (with the AuthorLastName Year: Page#) at the end of the sentence being referenced.

  2. At the end of the paper, there is to be a section titled References, Bibliography, or possibly Works Cited that alphabetically lists every source referenced in the paper. This also needs to list general sources that you have read that may not have been cited specifically in the paper.

The paper will be graded by how well you incorporate issues that you have read about and studied during the semester. Please include specific terms and topics that you have read in the class books and in related readings. As always, it is essential to reference citations appropriately.

Grammar and organization guidelines:

  1. Reference thoroughly, particularly for quantitative data

  2. Reference with “Source:” complete details, as for footnote, underneath figures, tables, and charts

  3. Organization name spell out completely initially, and then use the acronym later

  4. Include page numbers on each page

  5. Spell out all words (do not use contractions)

  6. When in doubt, reference

The research papers will be graded according to the following criteria:

  1. Following instructions; thoroughly including 5 parts to the paper

  2. Well written grammar with thoughtful analysis

  3. Clarity of thesis statement within introduction and supporting arguments

  4. Organization of paper that follows outline in instructions

  5. Strength in writing ability to lead paragraphs with topic sentences and to continue ideas throughout the narrative

  6. Writing with correct grammatical style and referencing style according to guidelines

  7. Appropriate use of academic and current affairs references, as complementary to relevant textbook references

  8. Citing with parenthetical references or footnoting references appropriately in the text

  9. Including a Bibliography, References, or Works Cited list as an extra last page of the paper

  • This should include all sources you have cited/footnoted and those sources that you have referenced generally as well
