GRADE LEVEL: 5 THEME : Healthy Plate LESSON OUTCOME/LEARNABLE PIECE: After a discussion on the food guide pyramid, the student will be able to create a healthy plate with 90% accuracy. EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS : Paper plates, crayons, markers, color pencils, ruler, plastic food on kidney table ( doughnuts, cheese, crackers, fries, chicken wings, ice cream, broccoli, carrots, rice, chips, cookies, milk, water, soda, chocolate chip cookies, pasta, and candy). PRO TOCOLS : Start Command : The teacher will tell the students when it is time for their group to go make a plate at the kidney table. End Command: INSTANT ACTIVITY : The teacher will ask the students to go to the kidney table and make a plate based on what they eat every day. Then the teacher will ask a few students to share the contents of their plate. SET INDUCTION : To stimulate student interest in the lesson, t he teacher will ask the students to watch a YouTube video about a basketball game (junk food vs. healthy kids). After watching the video, the teacher will initiate a discussion on the importance of eating healthy. PRACTICE/APPLICATION : First, the teacher will show the students a picture of a colorful plate called MyPlate (replaced Food Guide Pyramid). Next, t he teacher will tell the students that each section of the place represents a food group (red -fruits, green -vegetables, purple -proteins, brow n-grains, and blue -dairy). The n, the teacher will tell the students that it is important that when they are eating to include all of the colors from MyPlate on their plate. Last, the teacher will give the students examples of foods from the food groups. Fr uits - peach , orange, strawberry Vegetables - sweet potato , broccoli, peas Protein -beans , beef, nuts Grains: bread, pasta, cereal Dairy: cheese, yogurt, milk RESTATE /C LARIFY : The teacher will tell the students that it is important to eat food according to MyPlate because it will help you to stay healthy. Eating healthy will help you to grow strong, eating all of your fruits and vegetables will help you to grow strong. If you look at the picture of MyPlate you will see that the fruits and vegetable portion are the biggest. Activity: The students will use the materials provided by the teacher to create a Healthy Plate based on the guidelines of MyPlate. CLOSURE: Why is it important to eat healthy? What can you use a guide to show you what to include on your plate when eating? ASSESSMENT: The Healthy Plate that the students create must contain at least two servings of each food group and they must be appropriate ly placed.
