LESSON TOPIC:

Adding single digit numbers

AIM:

Recognize that mathematics permeates the world around us.

Appreciate the usefulness, power and beauty of mathematics.

Enjoy mathematics and develop patience and persistence when solving problems.

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to: Add single digit numbers. Students should know how to identify numbers. Students are 4-5 years old with the background knowledge of simple numbers.

DO-NOW:
(BELL WORK)

Students are to put the numbers in chronological order. This will allow students to get a fresh memory of the numbers they are about to add.

MINI-LESSON:

Teacher will go over the importance of adding numbers

Teacher will show students step by step different ways to add.

Students will use soft objects (classroom set blocks) provided by teacher to see, hear, and do what the teacher is doing on the board.

Teachers will allow students to give examples of what they think adding is

Teacher will explain what the plus sign means.

MAIN ACTIVITY:

Teacher will write problems on the board and ask students to take the number of soft objects from the pile they see on the board.

Teacher will hand out flash cards to students with different addition problems and ask students to pull out the numbers they see on the card.

Students will work together in a group to decide who has the greatest number

CLOSING:

Teacher will allow students to ask questions about parts of the lesson they may not have understood

Teacher will ask students to explain what the plus sign is

Teacher will allow students to ask their group partner to add two numbers of their choice.

ASSESSMENT:

Students will take 15-20 minutes and apply the lesson they’ve learned by working out 8 problems independently.
