Strategies, Goals, and Organizational Structure

o    State the company’s mission statement.

Harley-Davidson’s mission statement is “We fulfill dreams through the experiences of motorcycling, by providing to motorcyclists and to the general public an expanding line of motorcycles and branded products and services in selected market segments” (Thompson, 2017). I would like to include the company’s vision states which reflects their values, business strategies and represents their commitment to their customers as well as stakeholders.

Harley-Davidson’s vision statement is as follows: “Harley-Davidson, Inc. is an action-oriented, international company, a leader in its commitment to continuously improve our mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders (customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, government, and society). Harley-Davidson believes the key to success is to balance stakeholders’ interests through the empowerment of all employees to focus on value-added activities” (Thompson, 2017).

o    Discuss what you believe the company’s mission means to its internal and external stakeholders.

The easiest way to answer this question is by breaking down the company’s vision and mission statement. The list below are the core elements of Harley-Davidson’s vision statement:

  1. Action-oriented business

  2. International scope

  3. Leadership in stakeholder management

  4. Employee empowerment

  5. Value-added activities

The next list are the core components of the company’s mission statement:

  1. Fulfilling dreams through motorcycling

  2. An expanding line of products and services

  3. Selected market segments

By offering action-oriented business and international scopes I think the company promises internal stakeholders a profession/career, not just a job. With opportunities of employee empowerment this would definitely reassures people, they have job security no matter where they go. Supporting their employees makes for a better business making the company resilient against other motorcycle manufacturers. International scope allows employees to transfer to other stores, while offering their customized motorcycles and merchandise globally. This also implies plans for further expansion in the global market for motorcycles and related products.

In addition, Harley-Davidson’s vision statement shows commitment to satisfy stakeholders. Addressing stakeholders’ interests improves the company’s relations with the market (Thompson, 2017). In their mission statement they mention fulfilling dreams through motorcycling. Harley Davidson’s is known for their customized work. Any investor, customer, or stakeholder can see that their business will never go unappreciated with this company.

o    Provide a brief description of at least one strategic goal you have located on the company’s website.

In Harley Davidson’s mission statement, they outline their plans to expand the business. One of the objectives in their mission is product diversification. This will help expand the company’s products and services. The diverse expansion will improve the company’s product mix which they plan to use in order to attract more customers to the market. This allows the brand to stay modern and offer the new generation of Harley customers modern models.

o    How does this strategic goal support the mission statement?

This strategic goal supported their mission because Harley Davidson’s, has remained one of the most prestige motorcycle manufacturing companies of all time. They managed to overcome the great depression and numerous ownerships (Wikipedia, 2020). I do believe the goal is supporting the mission because construction of a new Harley Davidson’s plant began in Thailand in late 2018.

o    Do you think that the strategic goal is contributing to the company’s success? Why or why not?

I do think that the strategic goal is contributing to the company’s success because, Shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. bounced up 6.4% to $36.48 beating earning expectations. The plan for moving some production overseas was to combat the retaliatory tariffs imposed by the EU on imports from the U.S. Prior to publicly announcing the move of production to Thailand, the company had confirmed that he European Union offered HD’s motorcycles made in Thailand more favorable tariff treatment than the ones manufactured in the U.S. “Hogs made in the U.S. and shipped to the EU were currently subject to a 31% tariff, increasing to 56% in 2021, while those made in Thailand are subject to just 6% tariffs” (Kilgore, 2019).
