Summary

In this article, the authors (Geneiatakis et al., 2017) “set up the scene for a security and privacy threat analysis for a typical smart home architecture using off the shelf components.” and to do so they “ employ a smart home IoT architecture that enables users to interact with it through various devices that support smart house management, and analyze different scenarios to identify possible security and privacy issues for users.”

What was the problem that they were trying to address?

Individuals' behaviors may be monitored indirectly by monitoring the cyber and physical behavior of their wired home computers, supported living programs or smart meters. Privacy security in these dynamic situations, where different agencies and IoT technologies coexist and function together (Geneiatakis et al., 2017).

How did they address the problem?

The design of the cyber-threats’ paradigm for a smart home and recognition of two forms of opponents; internal and external factors like eavesdropping, impersonation, denials of service (DoS) and software exploitation, that may behave in a passive way or aggressively according to their target. Hence, illustrate the issues with the smart home devices (Geneiatakis et al., 2017).

What theories, if any were used?

Rather than a theory, it was discussions of various types of threats in smart home device and the underling architecture.

What were their findings?

IoT offerings to smart home customers not only expose homes to well-known threats, but even sensors (IoT) must help address vulnerabilities that were not previously noticed. It is because these tools are of small processing capacity, and depend on diverse network architectures that maximize the service's attack area (Geneiatakis et al., 2017).

What future research was discussed?

Continuing to introduce the study to analyze the effect on consumers and the IoT infrastructures of the various risks and to have adequate measures to enhance smart home privacy and to find a system to classify weak points in a smart home design automatically in this direction (Geneiatakis et al., 2017).
