An Interview with Queen Latifah

1. What got you interested in taking this course on confidence?

In all honesty my classes were pre-picked for me by my Success Coach. Throughout my entire college experience with Strayer my Success Coach has set the tone for my learning. This is my last year and I believe my last elective. What I will say is after reading the course description I was very intrigued. Queen Latifah you have been a shero of mine my entire life. I’m interested to see how she used her confidence style to help promote your success. I am looking forward to gaining skills that I can apply in the next few months when I start job hunting.

2. What does confidence mean to you?

It means to me having confidence in my own abilities; being able to command an audience; and though I am nervous exhibit confidence.

3. Why is confidence an essential skill for career success?

Confidence is important for knowing your self worth and not settling for anything less than what you know you deserve. When your confidence is high, you will go into interviews being able to talk the talk and walk the walk. This conference also allows you to negotiate your salary based on your potential and experience.

4. Think about someone in your life or at your job that has a lot of confidence in their career. Tell us a little bit about who they are and what kind of work they do.

Dr.Tia Parks lives in Wilmington Delaware and works as the Director of Student Admission at Cheyney University. Tia is a 36 years old and a mother of six children. Though Tia married young and had children young, she never stopped pushing herself to accomplish her goals and dreams. At the end of Dr.Parks pursuit of her doctorate degree I was able to proof read her dissertation and it talked about the disparities among African American women in higher education. This paper confirmed my confidence in finishing my bachelors degree and applying for my masters.

5. How does Tia Parks demonstrate CONFIDENCE at work?

Dr.Parks has moved up in Academia rapidly. She is currently enrolled in school to obtain her teaching degree. Tia wants to be a principal, so she can inspire other students to pursue the academic dreams.

6. Now, give me an example of how Tia Parks USES that confidence to solve problems, set challenging goals, or cope with setbacks.

Tia has used her confidence to encourage young adults not only to enroll in college but also to graduate. She sets the example that everyone sees and are able to follow.

7. Based on what you learned THIS WEEK, what kind of VALUES do you think Tia Parks has?

During college enrollment season, I saw Tia values of Education and Organizing. Tia planned a college recruit sessions late in the evening for parents who worked late at night. Tia has five school aged children and a husband at home. But because of her love for education she showed up for these college bound kids. She organized and executed a light snack, college information pamphlets, a few faculty members, and a few current students to show up and give their take on college life.

8. How do you think Tia Parks’s values AND confidence power their success?

Tia’s father is an educator and I believe this drives her along with growing up in property. She has more than a point to prove. She has five children looking up to her as she looked up to her dad.

9. Tell us how YOU plan to follow in Tia Parks’s footsteps by using your confidence in your own life and career.

At some point, I hope to be in a position to lead others professionally. Tia has shown me that my education is a stepping stone to my continued success. Her confidence in her abilities to encourage herself, her children and others is what makes her a successful person.
