Week one

Mercy hospital windshield survey

I will cover a windshield survey on a community hospital by the name of Mercy hospital, which is located in South Florida. The area around the hospital is large enough to accommodate a total of 488 acute bed hospital. This hospital is well known for its catholic religion, which is practiced by many people and thus the name Mercy for the hospital. Mercy Hospital was established in 1950 but was bought by HCA back in 2010. “Miami-Dade County’s only Catholic hospital, Mercy Hospital is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, Florida and is affiliated with HCA East Florida Division, an HCA affiliate. Since its inception in 1950, Mercy Hospital has maintained its reputation for excellence while following the Catholic tradition of caring for God’s people and providing spiritual support.” (Mercy,2020) It's the only on of its kind providing medical support as well as spiritual support.

Mercy hospital is located in coconut grove, a well-known and populated area where many people from Brickell and key Biscayne live. The area around the hospital is characterized by a cool and warm climate, which the hospital sits right next to the ocean. Giving the patients views of relaxation and comfort all while getting cared for. Around the hospital they’re number of saints placed in the peri op/ post op area of the hospital as well as in the main lobby and emergency department (ED). Although a larger corporation bought the hospital the saints and the catholic relics are still in place, giving this hospital more of a personalized care. With its unique atmosphere, Mercy hospital it is also very own because it is neighbor to a very famous catholic church here in south Florida. The church La Ermita de la Caridad, attracts many tourist and locals alike because of it unique location just like the hospital it sits on the coast of the Atlantic. The church has built a wall barrier between the ocean and the church it self, making it a sight to see and a place to gather.

Mercy was the first hospital in Miami to open its doors to Cuban exile physicians, enabling them to rebuild their lives. The following year, Mercy offered free medical care to any member of the Bay of Pigs Brigade.” (Mercy, 2020) This is another a very important aspect I have noted when researching this hospital. Since Cuban American culture is a big part of Miami having a hospital that is recognized and most importantly give and provide medical care for its most vulnerable. As, I drive by the hospital I noticed that the main building is in shape of a cross; this also plays in the role of being a catholic based hospital.

I used a personal car during the first day of my windshield survey, and I was able to observe and learn a lot around the community hospital. I was able to realize that most people around the hospital are aged between 15 and 50 years. This means that the population consists of many youths compared to the old age or the infants. The high society of the youths is because of the decreased death rate among the youths, which might be due to excellent health care services. There is less population of older people, which indicates a low life expectancy of the people in the area. The homes around the area are located close to each other due to the increased population level and the flat mortality rate. A high birth rate has also led to increased people around the area. The homes around the area are located close to the business premises and trading area, making it easier for people around the area to access items easily (Lundy & Janes, 2009).

The hospital is close to the ocean so it has enabled recreational activities such as swimming and boat riding is done around the area. This area also receives tourist who comes to visit and bring foreign currency which has dramatically led to the development of business activities in the area. There is a substantial market in the neighborhood, which is known for cheap manufactured goods, and that is where people from the community to buy suitable for sale to the local people. This area has fewer manufacturing companies, and they thus have to buy the most manufactured goods from the outside parts. The community around the hospital have developed road, and there is a metro rail line, which passes through the city making transportation of goods and people more accessible. Public transport is the most excellent means of transport that most people use as it is found to be cheaper (Grand parkway (State highway 99) segment B from SH 288 to IH 45, Brazoria, and Galveston counties: Environmental impact statement, 2012).

The streets in the area are clean, and the sidewalls are brightly colored to attract customers because many businesses have been located on the streets. There is less congestion around the streets because the community is spacious to accommodate the number of people there. There are so many stores and warehouses for storing surplus food waiting to be sold to the other communities and others waiting to be used within the community. There are so many businesses in the city which serves both internal and external market of the community. Visitors who come to the community are warmly welcomed into the community. People from different ethnicity come and settled there, thus there are mixed races in the community. I also realized that most businesses around the community used billboards and street screens in advertising their businesses. Most people in the community practice the catholic religion, which is evident by the presents of many catholic churches around and the neighborhood one. (Iarossi, 2006).

Week two

The first week of my survey is over, and I have all the information that I wanted for analysis. I went through the community hospital and the area around the hospital using methods of data collection, such as observation and taking photographs. I then recorded the data that I was collecting using note-taking and tallying. Analyzing the information is then supposed to be done by writing a report or even drawing the required graphs.
