Data Encryption
Data security is all about keeping the data safe and secured from unauthorized access, breach, ransomware lockup, or malicious corruption, i.e., changing data to make it useless. Data encryption is the process of hiding information from malicious actors or anyone else with prying eyes (Taylor, 2019). Encryption is a sophisticated mathematical algorithm which is also known as a data encryption cipher. The encryption algorithms transform plain text data into a sequence of ostensibly random, unrecognizable characters. This is called the ciphertext.
Using Wi-Fi services to connect to the Internet is very easy and convenient. However, there's always a trade-off when it comes to security, as it won't be much difficult for a hacker to intercept any connection, which could result in stolen user credentials and any other sensitive information. This is the main reason many websites use a protocol called HTTPS for encrypting data that are being sent between websites/networks. When the data is encrypted, it will be confidential when it transfers over the Internet. Whenever we send our personal information across the Internet, the data will get jumbled up in a manner so that when it travels through the Internet, it is completely unreadable, and this stops hackers who may intercept the data from seeing what you're doing, as all they'd receive is a random bunch of letters, numbers & symbols ("Why do we need encryption," 2017). The benefits of the encryption do not only limited to internet use. We can also encrypt data on your computer, mobile devices, USB, hard drives, etc. This will prevent misuse of the data if the device has been hacked, lost, or stolen.
In most cases, these encryption features are also met with control capabilities for devices, email, and data. Organizations are facing the major challenges of protecting their data and preventing data loss as employees use external devices, and web applications more often as a part of their daily business procedures (Lord, 2019). In this case, data loss prevention solutions can help prevent data theft and malware from removable and external devices and web and cloud applications. In order to make this happens, employees also need to ensure that company devices and applications are appropriately used, and that data is secured by auto-encryption even after it leaves the organization.
Nowadays, data encryption is becoming more innovative than ever. This includes encryption algorithms that incorporate biometrics and voice recognition. The industry is also introducing "Honey Encryption" traps that show a fake but plausible plaintext when hackers guess at the decryption key (Taylor, 2019). I believe that data encryption is the most common and fundamental necessary element of cybersecurity and data security in particular. This process requires highly sophisticated technology, but solutions are becoming increasingly easy to use, at least at the consumer level. In some cases, like with the iPhone, encryption does happen when the user saves data in the cloud. For Companies, encryption must be part of the security mix, administered selectively to sensitive data assets.
