Short Paper: Feasibility of Programs Based on Resources

California is facing a diabetic epidemic of almost un imaginary proportions. Fifty five percent of adults and 23 percent of teens living in California now either have type 2 diabetes or are pre diabetic. Unfortunately low-income communities are the ones mostly diagnosed with diabetes. As of July 1st 2018 Diabetes Prevention Program was approved in California Budget for Medi-Cal (Flojaune, 2017). This approval makes the Diabetes Prevention Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-approved program that has proved effective in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes among participants, a covered service under Medi-Cal. California will become the third state to provide the Diabetes Prevention Program as a Medicaid benefit, following only Montana and Minnesota (Flojaune, 2017). The Diabetes Prevention Program enrolls people who have prediabetes into a low-cost lifestyle change program that is designed to be administered outside of the traditional health care setting. To be eligible, a person must not have been previously diagnosed with diabetes, have a body mass index of at least 25 and have either a hemoglobin A1c value between 5.7 and 6.4 percent or experienced gestational diabetes during pregnancy(Flojaune, 2017). Led by trained peer coaches, the program helps people lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight through healthier eating and physical activity, which lowers participants’ risk of developing type 2 diabetes by two-thirds. Participants lower their risk for other diet-related chronic conditions as well (Flojaune, 2017). Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. Number one step to prevent diabetes would be to replace all the sugary drinks and candy in schools vending machines with healthier choice. Parents should get trained how to manage their kids diabetes and what activities are good for their kids (LAUSD). Biggest challenge is offering training for parents in managing their children's diabetes through diet and activities would be ideal, but this remains the biggest challenge. Most people in Los Angeles have busy lifestyle and it is very hard to add another task to their calendars. Another challenge comes with population ethnicity. Most of populations of Los Angeles are Hispanic and Armenian. In both cultures it’s accustomed that grandparents overfeed their grandchildren. No matter how overweight the child is in grandparents’ eyes they are always skinny and need to consume more food.
