Introduction

The learning outcome that I go for is on differentiating qualitative and quantitative research. It is a phenomenal concept in the research process, as researchers have to adequately distinguish between the two processes. After researching the different research methodologies, I came across an article by Carrie titled "Research methods" (Williams, 2007). It is a crucial resource for conceptualizing the difference between the two research methods in the CLO.

The article is about the research methods, which include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed approaches. According to the source, there is a significant difference between the two approaches, which is determined by the method of data collection and analysis. For instance, in the case of a qualitative research survey, observations and other description strategies are used in the analysis. In the case of a qualitative approach, different methods are used to collect data, including grounded theories, interviews, and phenomenology. The author claims that all the instruments used in collecting information assist in answering a specific question, which is the hypothesis. The author also argues that researchers aim to collect data, analyze and evaluate, and identify a particular phenomenon in the sets of data collected (Williams, 2007).

The essential concepts in the article as far as differentiating between quantitative and qualitative research is based on the difference in the methods of collecting information. The two approaches aim at collecting different categories of data. The article emphasizes the difference between the three research methods as they influence the outcome of a hypothesis.

Conclusion

The article by Carrie James provides a better platform for understanding the difference between the two research approaches. Qualitative data is obtained through grounded theories, interviews, and phenomenology. Quantitative information is collected through surveys and other description approaches. The data obtained in the latter is in mathematical models.
