This research is based on historical events that occurred between 1820 and 1860 where a famine known as great hunger forced the Irish people to migrate. Famine caused potato crop failure through Ireland (Woodham-Smith, 1962). Low productivity and high temperature promote the immigration of Irish to America. The importance of these historical events is that it outlines the factors that promoted Irish immigration in American. The migration not only provided a new home for immigrants but as well it helps in saving a life. This is because due famine millions of Irish died in the process and some of those who arrive in American at least were able to start a new life way from deplorable hard conditions. The main importance of the events is to examine how Irish fared once in America.

Secondary resources utilized in this research include an article authored by law, (2002) on the diversity visa lottery, a cycle of unintended consequence in United States immigration policy. The main theme of the article is on the impact of the immigration act of 1965 that expanded reform on the American system. The act replaced consideration based on preference where immigrant admissions were based on close family relationships. The diversity lottery arose from a group of Irish and Italian Americans who wanted to benefit their ethnic group with this favorable immigration policy. The second secondary article authored by Keely, (1979), title development of U.S immigration policy since 1965 describes the immigrant’s policies.

According to the article, congress passes the first of that national quota acts in 1921 that put a ceiling on immigration and reserve quotas within individuals in particular countries but the immigration act of 1965 change the immigration policy based on country of origin. The article is similar to the immigrant act and how it changes migration based on nationality to a preference system. The key difference between the two articles is that the second article introduces the first enactment that allowed immigration based on nationality. This article contains important information necessary in understanding the trend in immigration and how it affects Irish residents.

The thoughts that arise when researching for this article is to get an article that contains relevant information for this research.
