HIS 200: IRISH IMMIGRATION

Teleshia Colvin

SOUTHERN NEWHAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY

1: historical event

The historical event that I have selected it the great hunger which occurred between 1820 and 1869 that made the Irish people to migrate. The hunger led to less production of potatoes and this forced them to relocate to America. At the time when migration was happening, the groups of people were divided into two the skilled people who got easily assimilated to the American cultures and those who were not skilled. I choose this topic due to the fact that this shaped how migration occurs in America because it led to implementation of the immigration laws that are used till today. There have been restrictions which have been put in place for immigrants. (Hirota, H. (2020)

2: secondary sources

My first secondary source is the internet where it is located in encyclopedia official website in the “almanacs transcripts and maps” where I am able to understand how the potato famine was among the leading factors for the immigration of the Irish people in 1842. There was increased starvation after the farmers sold everything they had and could not get satisfied. The send source is going to be “employment permit regulations” of 2018 which is able to give me information about the current immigration laws that have been implemented currently and people who are not suitable for immigration. (Hatch, P. (2016) The two documents differ where the first one explains historically about the immigration of the Irish people to America in 1840s while the second one is a set of laws that govern immigration to America. They all have a similarity that they give more information about immigration of foreigners to America. (Kurtz, W. B. (2019).

3: primary sources

The first primary resource want a book named “diversion visa lottery” that was written by law Anna and after reading this book, I got more information concerning the migration this book informs us about the general immigration of people and not very detailed as expected. The second primary source used is the “writing American immigration history” which was authored by Sara Goek. In this document, I was able to get more information about how the immigration of Irish people led to implementation of laws. These two articles have a relationship that they inform us more on immigration of Irish people and how I led to implementation of new immigration laws that are used till today.

4: a research question

My research question based in the primary and secondary sources I have used will be, “How did the Irish immigration lead to the formation of immigration laws in America?”

5: the audience who will be interested in my topic

Academic audience will be very interested in my topic. This is because they already know the immigration laws that are in existence in America but they do not know where these laws came from. I am going to ensure that I relate the immigration of the Irish people to the laws that exist currently.

6: how to tailor my message

I will ensure that I have used historical analysis to pass my point to the learners. This is where I will explain to them step by step of what occurred. Example is where there was hunger that caused Irish people to sell everything they had, the money they got did not solve their problems so they decided to migrate to America, on getting to America the money they had was over they had to look for jobs being the poorest members of the society which increased competition since they offered cheap labor. This led to formation of the immigration laws that are currently used to restrict immigration to America. (Polatchek, D. (2018).
