Business Report:Decision Making in Leadership
You are a leader at your company, up for a promotion to a position you desire greatly, with a salary of $130,000
per year. To test whether you are ready for your new position, your boss (me) has asked you to write a report which demonstrates your knowledge. You have been asked to prepare a report on leader decision making.
(Note: leaders make decisions (decision-making ), followers take decisions (decision-taking) use terms wisely.
Your report should evaluate 3 frameworks/models of decision making from chapter 14 and a justified choice of
the model/approach you recommend for your company. You must discuss a problem that will help you to show
your knowledge of each model, so that you can properly assess the benefits and limitations of each model, and
then decide on the best model. You must explain how each model can influences leadership effectiveness; with
the problem you have chosen to discuss. The models are:
The Normative Decision Model
The Contingency Model
The Situational LeadershipModel
Your recommendations should be based on one specific challenge your company faces and clearly demonstrate
how the chosen model of decision making will help address this problem successfully. You must choose your
own real or imagined example, and compare three models using this example, to determine what model
works best for your organization. If you do not compare your example when discussing each of the models,
you will not get a very good grade. Keep in mind that you are the leader, you have decision making power and
you have the power to take steps to solve the problem. Make sure to use the same org problem for each model.
Common Errors • Forgetting to write about the problem (1 only) and address the reasons for that problem, in the intro and
then addressing this problem when reviewing each model, and then in the conclusion and action plan.
• Forgetting you are a leader. Some students report as if they are a low - level worker, without decision
making power and they report to someone else who will make the decision. Do not tell me what
happened to you at work because of SOMEONE ELSE’S CHOICES. Yo u are the leader in your department;
these are your choices. You need to take responsibility. Pick a problem that allows for this.
• Reporting on a past issue: if you discuss a problem that has already been solved, you will not be able to
analyze each model properly. Do NOT report on a past issue, do not provide a summary on something
that already happened. Instead, imagine something has already happened, leaving you with a new
problem you must solve. The problem must be new!
• Forget to tell me why you chose t he model, why it is the best choice, and the ramifications of choosing
that model (conclusion) and why you did not choose the other 2 models (citation - based statements with
support statements from your problem).
• Forget to lay out the steps of the model you chose, with the actions required (citation - based statements)
followed by the steps you will take for your specific problem (action plan) .
Before you start working on your report, read the grading rubric to identify key elements based on which your
report will be assessed . You must fulfill the rubric requirements if you want marks!
R equirements
• Write the pa per using APA style and format with 3 - 7 citations per paragraph
• Use 5 - 7 different sources (for 3 models) , including your textbook , include each one in the reference
section :
o Each model requires the use of the class textbook AND 2 other peer reviewed journal articles o U se the models defined in chapter 14 Contingency Theories of Leadership to write your paper

All sources must have authors, publication dates, and publishers.
• “Anonymous” authors, undated sources will not be accepted as valid sources and marks will be deducted.
• The paper should be about 2500 to 2800 words (7-8 pages, plus title page and reference list = 9-1 0
pages), and follow this report format: (1) introduction; (2) summary of the 3 models you chose and why
you chose these three models that you will discuss in the main body; (3) three sections for the three
models you chose: define each model, explain them, discuss how they are relevant or not relevant to your
problem; (4) conclude by recommending a model that is the best fit for your example, with the reasons
why/why not. (5) Finish by providing an action plan that you can implement at work based on your model
and the organizational problem that you need to solve. Clearly tell the reader the steps to solve the
problem based on the readings and then based on your problem.
• Write as if you are a leader who will take these steps in your company, to succeed. Your
recommendations must be clear for your Dr.Mandy (your boss) and your followers to act on.
• You are the one doing the research, if your boss/followers cannot understand the model based on what
you have written, you will fail this paper! Pretend you are writing this paper as a manual to help your
followers and the boss to understand what each model means, its pros and cons, why it is useful for your
example (conclusion=
recommendations – why you recommend this model over the others), and how to
implement it (action plan).
• Each chapter in the textbook has numbers beside each discussion area. These numbers have journal
articles attached to them at the end of the chapter. You can choose these articles to read that relate to
three models you will discuss in your paper. You can also choose more current articles if they are
academic, and peer reviewed and newer than 2015. Make sure to cite them in your essay by author name
and year only (do not cite titles). Only write the journal article name in the reference section at the end of
your paper. Do not refer to articles by the book/journal name. Also, models never state what to do, the
authors do. Example, do not state “the contingency model states there are three issues”… that is
incorrect . Instead, write “Minnis (2020) relates three issues with the contingency model (CM) ”…
• Must exhibit good writing, research, and analytical skills.
• Do
not use bullet pointed lists . Instead write full sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphs have at least 5
sentences! All headings except the intro, summary, and conclusion must have at least 2 paragraphs. Do
not use an introduction as a heading, we know the introduction is the first paragraph. Summary is the 2 nd
paragraph of the essay and will clearly state why you chose these three models that will be discussed.
• Avoid u se of charts, diagrams, and other visual components, in this paper.
• Instead concentrate on making your ideas coherent, relevant and convincing.
• Do not use the words I, we, you, us. Instead use “leaders, followers, clients, customers”. For instance, do
not write “I chose the contingency model as the best choice” instead write, “the contingency model is the
best choice, because…”. Do not write: “I chose three models”. Instead write “These three models where
chosen because”.
